Bo Pelini's defenses will be SIGNIFICANTLY better than Aranada's, especially between the 20s.

Aranda was great at lsu, but the defenses were very leaky.
Not a fair comparison. The game was different back then. It's much easier to be aggressive when the schemes are simpler, your players don't need to think as much, and the opponent is not as likely to take advantage of aggressive play. I'm not saying Bo hasn't evolved and that the defense won't be better. I knew Nebraska was making a huge mistake when they canned Bo and believe he's another great hire for LSU. It's just not fair to compare Bo's LSU defense to Aranda's. It's not apples to apples.

I'm really looking forward to this season though. Last year was all about whether we could climb the mountain. This year it's whether we can stay there.

He was fantastic in the Clemson game. Not so much against Texas, Ole Miss, or Alabama.

Fantastic in every post season game

Defense was completely different with a healthy Delpit

Divinity missed most of the year too, he was the teams 2nd best pass rusher

Queen started 11 of 15 games too

Yeah but one won because of their defense...the other was just along for the ride

Before 2019 the 07 offense was probably the best in LSU history and was at least as responsible for that title as the defense.

Bo had top 3 defenses at LSU. Aranda regressed every year seemingly. I’ll say Bo is an upgrade

Every DC regressed due to an offensive explosion in the last 4 years or so. The best Clemson defense in The Last 5 Years still got scored on by good offenses. That was with NFL Talent all over the front seven

So was 07 when Dorsey was healthy. I understand we had injuries and suspensions this year but we also returned a bunch of upperclassmen that historically would’ve gone pro.

If Divinity didn’t go AWOL how many games is Queen on the bench? He should’ve never been behind anybody but Devin White.

The Texas and Alabama games were way more important than UCF, Notre Dame, and Louisville. We also weren’t too hot against Notre Dame.

Look, I think Aranda is terrific. I just think we go overboard on how great he was at LSU, especially considering the talent he had.

Pelini's goal is to be a P5 coach again. My concern is he will be one and done at LSU as was Muschamp at Auburn. Of course if 2020 is a repeat National Championship on the back of an aggressive Pelini defense I'm ok with that.

I dunno if Pelini can handle the new rules and modern offenses... Aranda was solid...but I guess we will see

If Pelini is a one and done, LSU might have a shot at Muschamp to replace him. His seat is hot in SC.

I’m talking this season

Uga
Oklahoma
Clemson

Alabama prob had the 2nd or 3rd best offense in America. They had 20pts at home going into the 4Q against LSU. There were some weird flukey plays in that game.

LSU maintained a 2 score advantage for like 55min.

Divinity was LSU’s 3rd best player on defense in 2018 after Delpit & White who had all time great seasons.

Queen started the last 4g of 18’ anyway. So 15 of the last 20 games he started. It’s not like they caged dude.

I only brought up Alabama because they had more success in the 2nd half. In the first half they only scored on a punt return and a busted coverage. Outside of their first drive, we played them remarkably well.

You’re probably right, but Queen is better. He’s also better than Phillips.

You’re definitely right about it working itself out as the season progressed though. I’m don’t mean to make a big deal about it. It’s nothing compared to something like CEH sharing snaps with Brossette last year, for instance.

Xs and Os aside, I really think Bo’s style fits better here. LSU always has great athletes and most DCs will have success these days.

But I prefer a passionate and fiery DC with an aggressive style. Grantham has had that at Florida and I think he’s been the best DC in the SEC the last couple years. It’s nice to have that again with Bo imo

Bo won a title because the defense was so stout, Aranda won a title because the offense was ungodly. I think it's an upgrade but time will tell

I like them both, but I like Bo a lot more.

I'm still waiting for somebody to explain the coverage Aranda had us playing against Alabama with one minute to play.

If Bo has adapted to the crazy offense schemes, then an upgrade. If not, we will miss Dave.

Just going off memory but I don't recall during Pelini's time here thinking "that was a great offense we just stoned."

And for the newer offenses we did play he seemed to struggle to crack the code.

Dave frustrated me for about ten weeks but we played great down the stretch.

OH yea? What teams were those? The 2016 team that went 8-4 and had the #5 scoring D? 2017 that went 9-4 and had the #15 scoring defense? Or 2018 that went 10-3 and had the #39 scoring defense? So I guess his one top 5 scoring D held the team to an 8-4 season in 2016? Awesome.

Yeah that’s exactly what I’m talking about. Thanks for doing the homework for me.

Imagine how those seasons would’ve gone if we would’ve been counting on Danny Etling to outscore teams.

Hard to say. Pelini was very, very good.....13 years ago.

The type of offenses he will be facing are much different now.

ETA: Let’s also not forget that the defense nearly cost LSU a title in 2007 when they couldn’t stop a 6-6 Arkansas team.
