Not a fair comparison. The game was different back then. It's much easier to be aggressive when the schemes are simpler, your players don't need to think as much, and the opponent is not as likely to take advantage of aggressive play.

At least there is one person other than me that gets this. One only needs to look at the Ideal defensive player Models by position then vs now. The DL is smaller and quicker. The LBs are quicker an rangier. Defenses today have to combat the HUNH offenses and they have to cover space. Nobody of consequence ran a HUNH Scheme in 2005.

Two games illustrate this. Back in 2013 era we played Clemson in the Bowl game. We jumped all over them in the first half and looked like the game was over. Taj Boyd ran 100 plays and we couldnt keep up.
Auburn game maybe same yr we jumped on em early and put up a big lead. They ran 100 plays on us and came just short of a major comeback. I remember Freak Johnson and Ego on their knees pukin their guts out on a 4th qtr goalline stand.

but we also returned a bunch of upperclassmen that historically would’ve gone pro.

Lawrence and Fehko? that's "a bunch"? who else am i missing from the D?

that’s what I was wondering.

Will miss Aranda’s creativity and ability to get the best players on the field And he was the best 2nd half DC in CFB. Elite adjuster

i agree with this

Me too, and it makes me a bit nervous. If we get in a big game and the game plan ain’t working, who’s the “thinker” that’s gonna remain calm and figure out plans B and C? Pelini’s gonna be cussing and chewing arse—and I do think there is a place for that and there were times when Dave’s Ds could have used some of it—but who do we trust to adjust if it’s not Bo’s greatest strength? Maybe Bush or an analyst or 2 will be able to take a step back and see where in-game changes need to be made.

I don’t mean to imply Bo isn’t smart enough to figure shite out mid-stream, it just seems his style is to be more in the moment and, if shite is going sideways, his default is to yell at the players for lack of effort or execution rather than seeing the bigger picture for potential scheme changes.

And he was not very popular towards the end of his tenure here. I remember the hateful threads on this very board. Granted, most people on here are retarded, but I don’t think there were a whole lot of folks who were sad to see him leave for Lincoln.

Now, because we won the NC his last game, most of the hard feelings were rightly gone. But if all those dominos hadn’t perfectly fallen into place for us to get to the NCG and the reason was because he couldn’t figure out how to stop McFadden at home in the last game of the regular season, his history here wouldn’t be so revised as it appears to be.

I remember the melts on this board after the Az state and Tenn games. Some guys were ready to run him after those 2 games. There were a lot of “this ain’t the Big 10” threads. I was a big Aranda fan. He played it pretty safe the first 2 or 3 series of a game but once he saw what an offense was doing watch out. I think Bo will be fine. Totally different style of defense. He will be more exciting to watch but will give up more big plays than Dave’s D.

Upgrade to utilize our talent better. Will give up a few plays as did Dave. But will have more explosive plays on D. Many could b game changing

His defense in '07 was 17th in total yards but they had a ton of injuries that year.

In '05 and '06, his defenses were 3rd and 4th, respectively.

I've shown plenty of times that Aranda's defenses got worse and worse every year he was here. I know he's a defensive genius and all, but I wasn't worried about replacing him when he left.

I guess it's what you prefer. Do you like a bend but don't break defense or one that is physical up front and attacks with end rushers and constant blitzes?

Aranda was great at second half adjustments but given the talent on the roster LSU gave up too many points over the last three years.

I will say that LSUs offense this year put additional pressure on the D because the opposing offensive coordinators absolutely had to take risk they wouldn’t normally take. I’d love to know how many times opposing teams went for it on fourth down out of fear and desperation!

I don’t know what people wanted out of Aranda more than what he gave.

He kept us nationally relevant almost single handedly while O figured how he was going to run the program and got the offense figured out.

Then once we had the offense his defenses were good enough that we didn’t lose a single game.

??his defenses when ranked against other defenses in the same time frame got worse over the last 3 years. The change in offense should actually make you reconsider your view of Aranda in that maybe LSU is falling when compared to others because Aranda has NOT adjusted to the new offenses as well as some of his peers.

It’s not about Pelini vs Aranda. It’s about Pelini vs whoever was second in the running and didn’t get the job. Aranda was consistently good for 4 years. I never felt we we regressed over the course of any of his seasons. He never really had an answer for Mullen but other than that, the defense was consistently good through a head coaching change.

Maybe one knock would be he didn’t really recruit or pick talent well. Kendall McCallum and a couple other LBs were head scratchers. But he stayed when A&M came calling, he delivered a championship defense, and he left for a head coaching job outside the conference so I’m all good with it.

Different styles but most likely similar results when all said and done. We could have done a lot worse than Pelini.

LSU has had a LB picked in the 1st Rd 3x in the last 2 drafts. Everyone of those guys were developed by Aranda.

30yrs had gone by since LSU has had a 1st rd LBer taken (1989) before Devin White was picked last year.

There's no questioning Aranda's ability to develop and showcase his LB's. He is a master at that. It's the way he utilizes the DL that IMO has hurt LSU's ability to attract impact players in the trenches. I love Lawrence, Fehoko, Logan and Farell but none of them were or will be 1st round talent. There's so much room for improvement on the DL that can lead to improvement over Aranda's model. The key is running an effective defense that showcases players at each level of the defense. Everyone wants to eat! LSU's offense in 2019 is a prime example of what can happen when you use ALL the weapons at your disposal!

This thread has been fun. The people that think Bo in 2020 is a guaranteed substantive upgrade are off their rockers.

Dave or Bo. What say you and why?

3 up 52 Dn Arrows

Damn dude that’s almost a 50-7 TAMU BUTT KICKING

Thanks for the thread!

In the end, how do you judge TWO GREATS

1. Both Champions (Bo 2007, Dave 2019)
2. Both Brilliant
3. Differing personalities and styles
A) Aranda was CEREBRAL / CALCULATING not an in-your-face passionate arse kicking DC in the style of an Ed Orgeron
B) Bo is a SAVANT almost PSYCHO arse-chewing and motivating MACHINE on the order of an Ed Orgeron, likely making Ed smile more and saving Ed from screaming
(That’s gotta be a bonus)

We’ll have to wait and see but I like Bo as much as Dave right now because:

1. He’s closer to Ed Orgeron in style
2. He’s more agressive and that will lead to more SACKS PICKS FUMBLES and possibly allowing more explosive plays.

Great thread! Thanks

Which is relatively bleak considering we missed about 15 years of the spread revolution.
