I'm not being questioned without a lawyer. Ever.

Now sure, if the questioning gets to a point where I sense that they think I'm involved, then I'll stop and get a lawyer. I'm not an idiot.
You've already said too much at that point. Have probable cause for an arrest, or warrant(s) to search your house & office.

Wouldn't you want results of tests in hand for the "interview"?
Or i could ask him, but yeah this isn't why they aren't interviewing him
Its probably because this is a fricking murder investigation, and you don't rush it just to make sure a guy is draft able.
This is a shitty situation for Collins. I don't think he was involved, and it sucks, but at the same time, the BRPD needs to do its job.

Regardless LC shouldn't be at the draft and I can't imagine why he'd want to be at this point. The paternity of the child isn't as important to the case as is whether or not LC thinks he could be the father. The detectives will want to question him about all contact (especially sexual) he's had with the victim during the last year up until and especially last Friday night. An alibi is also important but doesn't necessarily clear him just as a negative paternity test wouldn't clear him. It's all about whether he believes or it's even at all possible that he could be the father of the child.
Once the detectives get all the info they need and they can crosscheck that with information they've compiled since the murder then and only then would a paternity test be used to corroborate LC's statement. They won't get him to come in and take a paternity test real quick, go to Chicago and then come back to make his statement after the result is known. The test must be after the full statement.
If he's the father and he says there was no way he could be then has a big problem. If he's not the father but he said he could be the father he could still have a big problem. If he says he couldn't be the father and the test proves he isn't and his alibi checks out then he's probably in the clear. This last result could have happened within the last 3 days if all parties were willing participants. It wasn't entirely necessary for LC to be present at the draft given the situation and it also wasn't necessary for news to get out concerning the police's request to interview LC. UNLESS, they tried numerous times and their efforts were delayed by LC, his agent or attorney due to the offortunate timing of the incident and the NFL draft. That's no excuse when it comes to a murder investigation and it's always best to be as cooperative as possible for the victim and yourself or else you will look like you have something to hide.
And no, it wouldn't be out of the ordinary to read a story about a person answering the door, then having an altercation with a person and then getting shot and killed. If it's a fact that the altercation had to do with borrowing a car that makes it a little less ordinary. That the victim was a woman makes it even less ordinary and that it was a pregnant woman (obviously pregnant enough that she should have looked pregnant) makes it much less ordinary (Don't have stats on this but I certainly hope it's unusual). That police have no suspects at this point isn't unusual but it doesn't help LC's situation at all. I'll be surprised if it gets turns out to be random.
Yes, the timing is terrible for LC, so terrible, it almost seems deliberately terrible and ultimately (hopefully) it may prove unfair to LC but I think both sides could have handled the situation better.

Agreed 99% chance the police questioning is going to be about who his ex was associated with Lael might be able to give them some insight as to who might have had something against her.
didn't he say he hadn't had any contact with him for 6 months or more prior .... also they could have easily swabbed him without him leaving Chicago.

to me it's obvious BRPD probably tried to go thru the quiet channels to contact him or his agent for a sit down chat, were stonewalled, and it leaked to the press to encourage him to get his arse home and talk to the police.
they either have questions about people he is acquaintance with, or answer to his whereabouts.
+1

do you really think it's in his best interest to be in chicago right now? seriously, think about it for a second. regardless of his involvement or lackthereof, it would be a completely miserable experience for him to be there, not getting drafted in the first round (or at all), and the entirety of the conversation being the uncertainty of his involvement in a murder of his pregnant ex-girlfriend. i mean use your head for a minute.

Just going to put this here. It's a criminal defense lawyer and a former cop turned defense lawyer explaining why you should NEVER talk to police even if you are totally innocent. LINK

So we are assuming Collins only became aware that police wanted to speak to him yesterday afternoon?
great point ! you know her family knew Collins was possibly the father i'd bet you a few diet cokes they have been trying to contact him since Saturday. And they didn't stir up and national media store because they thought he was innocent but just really wanted to talk to him.

I'm just going to say it-For the police to publically release his name is a huge indicator of where this case might be headed. "Witnesses" with material information are questioned quietly and behind the scenes for obvious reasons. That his name was released tells me everything that I need to know about where the investigators think this thing might be headed. That is a completely different proposition from any factual discussion about his non-involvement/involvement in this case which none of us have the first clue about.
I have my own intuitive feelings about where this is headed which like everybody else's opinions, count for exactly nothing. I will say that Lael's draft status being affected negatively is pretty far down the scale of injustice surrounding this case, that involves a brutally murdered woman and a parentless child.

Tuesday was not the first time the BRPD tried to contact him.
I guess this doesn't matter right
Why would it matter?
Even if innocent, you make sure you have all the evidence of your innocence available when you talk to the police. You have witnesses to back up the events too. It is called risk management
quote:
Sorry, but that's not how it works in today's media driven world. To deny all involvement from the top of your lungs actually makes you look worse in the public eye.
Not to mention that cops and the media hire people to read your body languages at press conferences.
they didn't seem to manage the risk of him losing millions to well did they?

Manage that his agent trying to pull him out the draft. It's time to ride the innocent until proven guity train. The draft just not important anymore.

No, but you do rush it to help find the murderer or the parents of a baby.

you don't rush anything in a murder investigation unless you're worried about losing important evidence. i don't think they're too worried about not being able to locate collins or his dna

You want to talk about something in post after post when you already admit you don't know shite about what you want to talk about. Sounds about right.

not necessarily. it could be for a multitude of different reasons honestly.
Agreed. In all honestly, the fact that BRPD is ok with the meeting not happening until Monday, it doesnt appear to me that Collins is being questioned regarding involvement in the murder. I mean, if they have any info at all that would make them think he did, I would hope they would press the issue a little more then this
you realize the police have no say in when he interviews or if he interview at all ..... i'm sure the would be happy to talk to him whenever he would make himself available.
