I had to listen to the radio call for the first time in forever last week due to being out of the country and unable to get my stream to work in the 2nd half.

I would have lost it

Never liked Jim Hawthorne. "Caught-dropped" and lost track of the yard line while moaning "my, oh, my."

I'll take a professional play-by-play guy if I have to listen to a game over a homer.

I may be in the minority but I couldn't stand Hawthorne. He constantly screwed up calls ("Jack Hunt!!!") and was sooo negative when things weren't going great.

This! If you turned on your radio after a bad series or bad inning, you would think the Tigers were getting slaughtered.

John Ferguson was the opposite. He could make a two yard loss seem like a 20 yard TD run. "Alexander takes the ball, cuts right, cuts left, sees daylight, he's on his way, and he's dropped for a two yard loss!"

listening to LSU play defense and having the other team complete passes is the worst

"And another, WIDE OPEN and I mean WIDE OPEN receiver makes the catch!"

Jim Hawthorn became an LSU fixture, and deserves nothing but esteem, in my view.
He will always be an LSU fan, worked very hard, and deserves the best. Chris Blair may be a bit more "professional" and polished than Jim was, But Chris is a very good replacement for Jim, and I enjoy his broadcasts and his willingness to become a Tiger. ??
Imagine yourself, for example, being hired to move to Tallahassee and enthusiastically
broadcast Florida State sports. Welcome to LSU, Chris Blair - and keep up the fine work.

JH was much better than Blair. I don't get the fans who don't like how he was a homer, he is the LSU PBP guy. I guess they got their wish with Blair.

Homerism is what makes college announcers awesome. In Florida, we have Gene Deckerhoff for FSU and Mick Huber for UF and they are very passionate. Deckerhoff has one HUGE problem in that he calls all of the players by their first name. Blair needs more passion and he will be awesome.

re: Unpopular opinion: Jim Hawthorn > Chris Blair
I never liked Hawthorne calling the game. He was such a negatiger sometimes. The disgust in his voice on a negative play brought me down.

I don’t love Blair but I like him better than Hawthorne. Really my main complaint about Blair is that “Touchdown Tigers” shite sounds forced most of the time.

ETA:
quote:

t. Every pass completed against us was "wide open

Exactly!!! And when you would see a replay of it, he wasn’t really wide open.

I actually 100% agree with you. He's much more polished obviously but his "big calls" just don't get me excited like Hawthorne's did.

The job of the play-by-play voice is not to make you feel good, it's to give an accurate description of what is going on on the field as it happens and in that Hawthorne was clearly lacking.

The most confusing Hawthorne call was when we had Bernard Woodside in the Dale Brown era ... "Farside, Woodsde"... "skips the ball over to nearside, Woodside"...

re: Unpopular opinion: Jim Hawthorn > Chris Blair
I likened it to Harry Carey when my cousin stated his preference for Hawthorne.

Harry butchered names and made nonsensical comments but the emotion seemed genuine and it endeared him to all Cub fans.

Milo Hamilton was the Cub play-by-play man before Harry and they worked together a couple of years and would alternate between radio and t.v. Milo was certainly more polished and professional and made fewer mistakes but it was no contest who the fans liked most...not even close.

I see some similarities Re: Blair/Hawthorne.
