re: Travinski or Milazzo

Even as much as Kentucky runs, you can’t take Hayden’s bat out of the lineup; he’s just too hot right now. And I’m a big Alex Milazzo fan. My question simply is there something wrong with Milazzo. It made absolutely NO sense not use Alex as a defensive replacement in the top of the ninth Sunday night against Oregon State. Yet he didn’t come in. And we had an inexcusable passed ball which put the tying run on 2nd base. I wondered then and wonder now, is Alex dinged up right now?

It will be Skenes' call. Does he want a bat or a perceived better receiver....although I'm not convinced of that.
Yeh it’s a really strange narrative that Milazzo is this great defensive catcher
He stabs at pitches instead of receiving them making him a below average framer
He also isn’t as sure handed defensively as you’d want for a perceived “defensive catcher.”
Good arm but Travinski is equally skilled there
I just don’t see positives in putting Milazzo in and taking out any of the regulars from this past weekend

It sure as hell is a unanimous narrative then. Because it’s all I’ve ever heard or read.

I hope you’re not serious.

Trav at first, Beloso at dh, Morgan to second, sit Dugas.

I wouldn't change much from this past weekend. Besides Trav/Beloso going back-to-back HRs in consecutive games, they are really complementing each other. I also want Tre at first, he saves a lot of runs unseen.

Lefty at second isn’t gonna happen.

I think Jay will consider starting Milazzo, at least in game 1 to help protect Skenes. Kentucky stole 6 bases against us, against Milazzo, the better defensive catcher. They will run and they will run often...if they get on base. If he starts Milazzo, Pearson is the likely odd man out. He didn't see much action against Kentucky, and the rest of the possible guys to sit hit well against them. Morgan would go to LF, Beloso to 1B, and Travinski to DH. Not my ideal defensive tradeoff, but I understand the running game is a big part of things this weekend.
I don't know what the right decision is, but I think it's more of a consideration than many think. Travinski has a plus arm, but he has some trouble on the transfer (and obvious receiving and blocking issues). The less pressure on Skenes, the better...but less pressure in the form of offense and wholesale defense (not just at catcher) is also a thing, especially given Skenes' ability to hold runners well on his own.

I don't know if it's serious but Milazzo has been wearing a brace on his thumb. Also can't recall if it's glove hand or throwing hand.

Pearson is really coming on in the 9th hole, and is plus defense over Beleso at first and Tre in LF. Tre at 1st goes to your point of holding runners on base.

I think it also depends on what Kentucky does. If they are really pitching backwards again then maybe Milazzo should start.

CJJ probably didn’t sub Milazzo for defense late in a 1 run game because he wanted to keep Travinski’s hot bat available in the event of extra frames.

Milazzo's Glove/Framing >>> Travinski's Glove/Framing... then again Travinski's bat >>> Milazzo's bat. Win lose situation here. You want Milazzo's catching/framing skills but Travinski's bat NO DOUBT. Tough decision... but the amount of past balls & balls that should've been called strikes on Monday was a poor job by Travinski. He had to have had over 10 past balls.

So Skenes is making lineup decisions now. Interesting...
Don't be an idiot. It is very common for pitchers to have their preference on who catches for them.

Travinski has thrown out 4 of 13 base stealers while Milazzo has thrown out 4 of 19.

stats don’t tell the same story.
No, they don't.
Other factors:
Who was pitching (slow to the plate)
Score and inning
Block up and throw vs clean catch and throw

Look at their passed ball stats. This season, Milazzo has 1 PB in 287 chances and Travinski has 7 PB in 196 chances.

I think framing is something both guys need to improve on, they are equally bad at this. I can't recall if Neal was better, I think he probably was.
All that aside, I think it is pretty clear to anyone that Milazzo is the better overall defensive catch but not enough better to justify putting him in over Travinski's much better offensive performance. Milazzo is not bad offensively, just not nearly on Travinski's level. If Milazzo does start, it will be because Skenes has specifically asked for him.

You dont take a guy swinging one of the hottest bats in the country the last 2 months to avoid a couple shitty plays behind the plate...sorry, you just dont

Travinski should start but should be subbed out late in the game if we have the lead. I still couldn’t believe we didn’t do that this weekend. Travinski had just batted in the 8th or 9th and we still sent him back out there. Pass ball happens almost immediately.
