bullshite. A Disney thread with parents going into debt to take their kids regularly goes multiple pages.

The reason travel ball is singled out is the absolute absurdity of what it’s turned into. Down to kids needing $400 bats and “merch”. I follow several photographers on social media and they have parents paying hundreds of dollars for “sports photo” packages. And again, only about 2% of high school players even make a D1 roster.

Not financially it’s not. All that money could’ve been in the market for those years and if the parents are real ones by the time they retire they can die knowing they are leaving their children all in a good spot

Kid could be out making money too

My kid been crawling those attics as a sparky apprentice since he was 7. Only 6 more years til he turns 18 and can take his journeyman test

So you’re against kids having $400 bats? Is it something you can’t afford? Are your kids not good enough for it to matter? Do you think the $150 bat is just as good? Trying to understand your angle about a retarded statement.

This is called gaslighting.

Rather than addressing the argument regarding the money spent on travel ball, instead you flip the discussion to “well, you must simply be too poor”.

That is a female argument if I’ve ever seen one.

And when over 60% of travel ball parents go into debt for this, her point is relevant.

We just bought the step kid a new PlayStation, so affordability isn’t the issue.

But to go even further I played travel ball in HS (soccer and basketball). I got recruited to play D-II in soccer and NAIA in basketball. But it was an affordable option for my family (and no I didn’t grow up with money) where I was able to fundraise for travel costs and uniforms. I didn’t need a $400 bat to get noticed and we weren’t playing travel ball until high school.

And yes, a $400 bat for a 10 year old is stupid. Just like paying thousands of dollars and most families going into debt to do so is equally stupid. That’s the point.

Congrats on your athletic success. That’s cool. But you also played sports that “tools” didn’t matter.

Now you’re just being purposefully obtuse because OP is calling out people like you.

How am I being obtuse. Soccer and basketball does not require a sporting tool such as a bat like baseball/softball does.

His release is 10 feet off the ground? He has arms that go up over his head 4 feet and he doesn't "sit" on his delivery?

Kid is a unicorn.

I have a coworker who spent years talking up his son's travel ball performance to the point of insufferable. After realizing he had gone silent about it for months, we learned that he didn't make varsity his junior year.

My old combat Marine vet dad who grew up in the depression without a dad never asked but one question after we played a game: did you boys have fun?

if he’s talented enough and wants it bad enough, he can make it. Instead of the travel ball luxuries and delusional adults expecting Jay Johnson in their living room, he can grind it out in JUCO/D-7 for a few years and a coach will find him. If that’s too hard then it wasn’t meant to be. That X account is just a wanna be recruiter trying to gain followers.

My son played travel ball. My goal was for him to be a part of his high school team and experience the camaraderie of being a part of something. I thought it would help him in his development as a young man. The high school coaches also had a formative influence on his life. Athletics are a great thing for young men just keep it in perspective. This mom has lost sight of everything. She wants it more than her son.

I think a lot of parents need to realize that if you're spending a lot of money on your kids athletic journey, it's not some investment where you will see a return in the investment, ie college scholarship, going pro. That's most likely not going to happen. That money spent should be purely because you love your kids and want them to have the best childhood as humanly possible.

When my kids were growing up I looked for activities they seemed to enjoy and had interest in. I would do what I could to help them get better and progress at it. My first son played sports. He played travel ball and yes had some lessons. My second son loved music. He took drum and percussion lessons and did very well. He still plays to this day. To me those things aren’t any different.

Add to that the transfer portal

This is a problem with all sports. Unless you’re a 4-5 star recruit you go to a small school and prove yourself then transfer.

The Tyran Mathieu and Jacob Hester types don’t end up at an LSU in 2026.

2027 and 28 high school kids are getting screwed by the new 5 year rule.

This^^^^. My kid is in her recruiting year so we are dealing with this issue. Class sizes for the sport have shrunk from 10 to 5-6. There’s enough spots for the top HS players. Good players with great academics are getting ivy spots because the ivies aren’t going 5th years (but their good players move to top academic schools for their 5th year still taking up desirable spots). It’s the next tier down that is getting screwed; players who would have been recruit number 7-10 on a 10 person recruiting class.

Coaches took years of their money instead of being honest with them. I’m a coach and I can tell within 5 minutes whether the kid has it and/or has the ability to be it . And it starts by seeing who’s in the stands
