but Duplantis stopped playing the ball
He stopped playing the ball after it was called foul. That's what I saw. He initially chased the ball and relaxed after the third base ump called it foul.
The call was missed. Oregon State missed their chance to get a review.
The rest is history. LSU continued to put it to Oregon State and again the following day.

We were the only ones completely blameless in all of that.
True, but considering that it was obviously fair, that after a replay OSU would have probably been awarded 2 bases and 1 run with men on 2nd and 3rd and a shift in momentum that surely would have resulted in OSU winning, LSU should do the honorable thing and vacate the victory and let OSU come back to play tonight.

quote:This. Without super slow motion replay, everyone thinks the umpires made the right call. The ball is slicing away from fair territory, the indentation on the padding is imperceptible from where the umpires are, and the ball bounces into foul territory after it hits in the corner. It was a very tough call to make, and the fact that the OSU third base coach also thought it was foul tells you all you need to know. Unless the umpire is 10 or 15 feet away in the left field corner he is going to call that ball foul without an instant replay.
Had the TV guys not done their thing, no one would have ever mentioned it except to say that it was close.
On a side note, I can only imagine the shite Mainieri would be catching if he had let a play like that go unchallenged.

Whether intentional or not, Duplantis' reaction made it appear he was 100% sure the ball was foul. He was the closet person to it and I wouldn't be shocked that his reaction caused the ump to reach the same conclusion.
Good point.
The fact that the ball bounced hard left may have influenced the call as well.

Apparently so. I'm sure the wide strike zone on Saturday was somehow our fault too.

Beaver fan here...
- The not requesting replay is squarely on us. Our coach blew it, he knows he did. This baffles me. Even if I didn't know the replay rules, I'd be asking right then and there.
- I'm not a blame the umpires guy. So yeah, the zone was terrible, the guy behind the dish was a joke, but it's our job to adapt. Your kid painted that spot all day and took advantage. Our pitchers did not. When Fehmel missed, he missed big.
Anyhow, congrats and good luck this week.

I wish more LSU fans were capable of this kind of objectivity after a loss, but it's just not the case.

eh.. fans are fans and everyone has the same types. Every fan base has great fans, every fan base has internet trolls, fans who blame the refs and always think the deck is stacked, etc. I get it, it's emotional for many. Tough way to go out after an amazing season. Life goes on.
My kid is a a wrestler and we always say - the ref doesn't decide who wins or loses, your wrestling decides who wins or loses.

I was a wrestler and I totally get that. My coach used to tell us that when you step out on the mat your only opponent is yourself, and you are the only person who can change the outcome. When each person on a team sport (like baseball) takes the game on like that, teams become capable of really great things.

And it would NOT have been a home run if it had been called fair. It was not over the fence. The idiots who kept saying it was a homer and would mean they were up 3-2...BS

You said it...
He took a pretty tough loss this year at a fairly big tournament in Reno last spring. Lost 4-3 on a penalty with about 5 seconds to go (a penalty that we absolutely couldn't find when we watched on video). Was pretty stoked that his first response was "Yeah I'm pissed at the ref, but it should have never come to that. I didn't wrestle good enough."
Anyways, back to CWS... I'll be watching. I think you guys have all the momentum and should be in great shape.

Good luck to your kid. He sounds like a good one. Mine was a wrestler, too. They used to say, "Beat the kid, beat the clock, beat the ref."

What I'd like to know is why fair territory on the wall is 8-10" wider than it is above the wall?
Had the ball cleared the wall it's a foul, left of the pole.

My opinion here -
If we are so kind to allow a "what if" scenario after full acknowledgement that the coaches blew this, not LSU.....if I'm an OSU fan, I can be mad at my coaches.....and frustrated at my team for not responding to the challenge and opportunity in front of them. But, pissed at LSU???
Best case for OSU is to allow a ground rule double with either 1-2 runs scored. However, LSU gets credit for the out on the kid that hit the foul line (since he did technically continue to bat and Lange got him on an infield out). The next batter struck out for out #3. So, at best "tie game". That is actually what transpired - all else is pure conjecture and handing OSU excessive credit for that one play.
We can all speculate on what could've happened thereafter but I contend that it's harder to protect a 2-runlead than it is to climb back with 7 innings remaining. OSU had the opportunity to climb back but they barely scratched 2nd base thereafter with only a couple of singles. Hardly a dominating effort on their part in that game - and I dare say they showed much resolve in game 3 - if my team is a "dominant" better team, they find a way to bounce back - OSU showed nothing.
Hate it for both teams - neither deserve the controversy or criticism. Both are champs in my book. But LSU is more than deserving of the series win, and there should be no "tainted" attached to it - ESPN is no different than the rest of the MSM - they thrive on focusing on controversy and rarely acknowledge the stellar play by the winner. They prefer to focus on "the little guy got screwed" theme. That is unfair to LSU.

It probably would have been a double or triple, but not a homerun.
I don't watch ESPN unless there is a ball game on, and usually only when LSU is playing, but if anyone on that network said it should have been a homerun, they need to be replaced and given a different job. The only way that ball was going to a homerun would have been an inside in the park HR.

I believe that was an illusion caused by the angle of the camera view. If you are looking straight down the line, I would bet that the foul lines all line up. It's just that the padding is several inches, maybe even a foot or more, closer to home plate.
On super slow motion, the ball was fair. It's just one of those things that would have passed but for the guys in the TV truck not enhancing the shot like CSI Omaha.
