Chavis is one hell of a coach when he has 4 or more NFL propects playing for him. But he hasnt changed since Tenn. So lets get him 5-6 All Americans on the team each yr and its all good from there.

I don't think everyone is down on Chavis....but I definitely think we do not blitz enough to knock a QB out of his comfort zone. Lets dial it up a little more.

uh, so exactly what players should chavis be scheming around? The secondary is the weakest unit, and the dline cant get pressure, so whats the game plan against a quality passing team there coach? send six guys on every other down, leaving every corner manned up and one or no safeties deep? Pretty solid. You should write chavis a strongly worded letter. the reality is, when you have weaknesses in your dline, linebacking core, and expecially your secondary, your options schematically are severely limited. Arguing, well, uh, he should just adjust to what he's got and put a top ten defense on the field is completely asinine if you completely ignore what he's actually got talent wise. Also, I cant wait to bump this thread in a year or two. so many sig quotes to be had...

I agree with whats said, my problem is that we knew we were going to lose at least 5 of those guys, where was the recruiting?

some things can be planned out a bit better for 6.5 million dollars between the big 3..

If its me, I'm recruiting Danielle Hunters replacement now, cause he is only going to be here for 3 years...You always want to try and recruit a guy thats better than the one you had.

And now you have a war for the cream of the crop instate kids (Should NEVER Happen) We have lost two tremendous players the last two years and it has hurt us bad...Losing Cameron Robinson will hurt bad. We lose the Big SA RB to Bama, its over bro, and dont tell me there are ones better out there, you put a steel curtain around LA and you win...(Hmm... Brings to mind someone else doing that)

With the talent we had I don't see this as something positive for Chief.

Chavis a good DC, but this is refreshing to see that he's not sacrosanct.

The defense has done nothing
But regress since 2011. If your players get beat because of sub par talent that's one thing. To see them lose because they can't tackle, can't understand where to line up, play the wrong coverages and show ZERO improvement over the course of the season is on Chavis.

This is legitimate criticism. And FTR, we are no longer a young D. If Chavis is as competent as the OP claims then even with the talent we have, he should be able to figure out way to get some stops, TOs, etc vs Bama and A&M.

I don't see how anyone could say this. IMO, they are our strongest unit, specifically the corners.

Unfortunately, your self-righteous screed disregards the fact that the defense's woes started BEFORE the mass exodus of the underclassmen. We were terrible in the two minute defense against Bama in 2012. We were atrocious against Ole Miss and Arkansas in 2012. And we were mortifyingly bad against Clemson, especially in the second half. Hence, all of the defensive struggles cannot be attributed to early NFL declarations. Rather, scheme and technique appear to be implicated. Those are coaching issues.

I'm not advocating that we fire Chavis, but he is clearly deserving of some criticism.

Miles and staff should also be criticized for the recruiting misses (esp. in 2012: Levall, Collins, etc.) that contributed to the current talent shortfall and exacerbated the NLF departures.

When you lose juniors to the NFL, why not have new juniors to take their place?

That's the key. We have to start taking a look whether we whiffed on Mickey, Thomas, and our plethora of linebackers. If DJ Welter is the best you have after all the linebackers we took, then you have to say we didn't evaluate/develop properly.

Correct, getting players and coaching them up is on the coaches. They are not doing a good enough job to keep us a national title contenders.

Agree. (It was long)

But I do agree that the defense has always been the least of our problems. And this year it has been getting better each game while the offense regresses.

But what do you expect from a fanbase that would criticize one of the best defenses in the country in 2010. Some of these idiots were critical of the defense in the BCS on 1/9.

Beckwiths future is at de. Its obvious that's where the coaches want him. And I can't argue, they've made pretty good decisions on what position players should play.

Well except for trindon. Should have been playing de from day one.

Dt depth was going to bite us. We've had someone leave early every year since 2010.

I disagree about lb. Sheppard and minter were seen as too small to play mike. Multiple people said wed have trouble against power run teams because bama has 270lb backers while ours struggled to get to 230.

Both shep and minter exceeded expectations set for them when they took over at mike. That's the problem. The 3 ga boys were really good. Better than fans wanted to give credit for. Riley, shep and minter were just beasts.

Top 25 is good enough? With the talent we bring in? No sense in wasting good words on you, man.
