No depth on the DL (draft) and green CBS (Robinson, Clearinghouse) are the problems this year.

Chief has done well with what he has to work with. The D will be dominant next year with 9 returning starters and loads more experience on the 2-deep. Unfortunately, our offense will likely be a shell of itself.

Chavis kept Phulmer off the hot seat for years. His "views and play calling" didn't get him fired, Kiffykins wanted to bring Daddy with him. The Chief has brought stability to your defense, so Miles only has to worry about one side of the ball.

those irritating things called facts disagree with you.

LSU defense opponent third down conversion %,
rank nationally: (out of 120 teams)
2012 - 12th
2011 - 19th
2010 - 16th

and it's real now.

2013 - 57th

yeah, having two 18 year old corners has nothing to do with these numbers. especially when all the rest of our dbs save one are true sophomores.

i just can't buy this. i think louis is starting to play more in nickel while welter will be out there in the base defense. if the 'lines everyone up properly' claim is true then thats about all he brings and lining them up sure isn't helping much.

My guess is that chavis has no faith whatsoever in the ability of lamar louis or beckwith handle that responsibility. much less faith in the other young guys to get their assignments right on their own. so he's trading off reducing the risk of busted assignment

my take on this, when you lack talent on D as we do and you're just getting gashed you really can't afford to have a role player out there who contributes nothing, actually he makes you worse. This is acceptable if he were half way decent, but he sucks and is hurting the team. He doesn't belong out there no matter how well he knows the defense. There are also other guys out there (Hi Loston!!) who shouldn't be out there anymore either, but for whatever reason still play>

As for the rest, when you're one of the top paid assistant coaches in college football you're going to get criticism when your unit is playing this bad, sorry. We knew going into this year our DL lacked a pass rush, schematically Chavis has done jack shite to account for this. I expected a D fall off but nothing this bad. It's also fair to question his scheme going forward with the new look offenses in our conference.

top 25 defense

You can take your stats and shove em. We are a "top 25 defense" statistically because we have played Furman, Kent St, UAB, TCU (while good defensively their offense sucks), and same for Florida.

We have played 3 decent offenses, and then Miss State. How has our defense looked in those games? We've been torched by UGA, Auburn, and Ole Miss. Miss State abused us until one fluke-ish turnover in the second half and our offense just pounded them into submission.

There is zero chance that following our last 3 games our defense finishes in the top 25.

The defense has done nothing
But regress since 2011. If your players get beat because of sub par talent that's one thing. To see them lose because they can't tackle, can't understand where to line up, play the wrong coverages and show ZERO improvement over the course of the season is on Chavis.

Ask the rest of the country how they're defenses are doing without NFL talent on defense.

Also, I hope you're not implying that most of these kids won't sign with a team at some point in their career.

Montgomery, Mingo and Minter (and likely others looking at the NFL draft as well) were to a greater or lesser extent mailing it in. Once we lost to 'Bama, their focus was on not getting dinged up in advance of the combine and local NFL workout days--especially in the bowl game. Not an ethical approach, but that shouldn't surprise anyone.

This is what I don't understand. It has long been said that Chavis runs one of the most basic defenses in the SEC. No team has ever played us and said, "Wow, we just couldn't figure out where the defense was blitzing from." I can understand the drop off in talent, but something is really wrong with us not being able to line up in basic fronts and execute basic coverages.

I agree, (did not read all of it, tl;dr) but if we are going to have that philosophy, then we need to put up 40 points on everyone to win. We didn't do that against OM and we didn't under Florida (but should have).

Les philosophy of playing keep the ball and score less does not compute with Chavis philosophy of prevent/zone defense because we have youth.

That's where the problem lies, you have a defensive strategy that does not work well with the offensive strategy.

Best thing I have read on the rant in years. Sadly, it's true.

Feel free to bump my statement if we finish the year ranked in the top 25 defensively.

My point is that we face two excellent offenses in the next two games, and I believe that by the time we face Arkansas, we will struggle to stop their running game.

My hope is that the offense can put up 45+ in the next few weeks so that we can win.

LSU can't Close...either on Offense with 1st Downs or Defense when the clock is Running Out...Single biggest Weakness in the Past 2 Plus Years.
