Nebraska’s 1995 national champions were voted the best by the Sporting News

Strength of Schedule & Competition

1995 Nebraska: Defeated four opponents that finished in the final AP Top 10 (No. 2 Florida, No. 5 Colorado, No. 7 Kansas State, No. 9 Kansas), routing Steve Spurrier's Florida Gators 62-24 in the Fiesta Bowl.

2019 LSU: Set an NCAA record with seven wins against top-10 opponents, playing a 15-game schedule that included wins over five final top-8 teams and a dominant CFP run led by Heisman winner Joe Burrow.

Statistical Dominance & Margins of Victory

1995 Nebraska (12-0): Outscored opponents 53.2 to 14.5 per game (average margin of +38.7 points). Won every single game by at least 14 points, facing no close contests all season.

2019 LSU (15-0): Outscored opponents 48.4 to 21.9 per game (average margin of +26.5 points). Had three regular-season games decided by 7 points or fewer.

Wow, what a shocker. A media outlet doesn’t choose LSU. It wouldn’t have mattered if 2019 LSU had beaten every team on their schedule by 50 points, they would’ve still found a reason to choose whoever over LSU because f**k LSU according to the media.

Wait, you're telling me a publication that peaked in the 90's is picking a 90's team as the greatest ever?

...weird.

That ‘95 Nebraska team was all around disgusting.

If there was one team I had to pick with the chance to beat ‘19 LSU it would be them. No other team comes close.

The 95 Nebraska team was phenomenal. They were all on roids and had tons of criminals on that team, so they didn't follow a lot of rules. But them destroying one of the best UF teams of all time under Spurrier in the NC cemented their legacy.

Now, LSU had the best season ever with who LSU had to play and I would put that LSU team up against anyone, but 95 Nebraska can be in that best ever conversation. Different era and completely different styles though.

95 Nebraska averaged 7 ypc, never allowed one sack and never had 1 holding penalty the entire season. They ran the option to perfection. With that said, 2019 LSU could have beaten anyone by the end of that season. They were a machine even against the best of the best.

People forget, too… that LSU eased up on several teams, sparing them a worse beating.

As evidence, witness what we did to Oklahoma in the playoffs. It is no stretch of the imagination that if LSU chose to score 100 points in that game, they could have.

I have never seen such a destruction of a top tier team as that one. That loss should have been a program-breaker.

I posted this sometime ago in another thread.

When looking back trying to figure out which team in college football is the GOAT people over look the quarterbacks that the 2019 LSU defense had to play against. Here is the list and tell me which college team played against more future starting NFL quarterbacks during their teams National Championship season.

List below:
LSU 2019 vs Quarterback
GASO's Justin Tomlin
UT's Sam Ehlinger
NWST's Shelton Eppler
Vandy's Riley Neal
Utah State's Jordan Love*
Florida's Kyle Trask
MSU's Garret Shrader
Auburn's Bo Nix*
Bama's Tua Tagovailoa*
Ole Miss' John Plumlee
Arkansas' KJ Jefferson
aTm's Kellen Mond
Georgia's Jake Fromm
Oklahoma's Jalen Hurts*
Clemson's Trevor Lawrence*

I see five future NFL starters. Nebraska and Miami defense never played against that many future NFL starting quarterbacks during their season.

I mean...that team was dominant. Just being great enough for it to be reasonably debatable is amazing.

Neb, LSU and Miami are in a stratosphere all their own over the past, what 30 plus years at least. Good company, I'd say.

The only thing that Nebraska team had on others was the # of players that would have failed steroid tests

And the 8 other teams were 6-5, 6-5-1, 5-5-1, 4-8, 3-8, 3-8, 3-8, 3-8. A veritable murderer's row

Pretty dumb to compare teams across eras anyway.
