The series with Florida State from 1979-1983 has to be the worst scheduling mistake in CFB

Of course at the time, it appeared to be a safe bet when it was put in place in 1974 or 1975. Florida State had gone 0-11 in 1973 and 1-10 in 1974. 5 consectutive years at home, lets sign them up.

But then they started to rise while LSU began to falter. Only the '81 loss was a blowout (this was the year they played 5 straight road games agaist big time teams) but LSU going 1-4 is still 1-4.

Hopefully we can chip away at the series deficit next weekend.

The scheduling was a mistake? How about lack of vision to keep Cholly Mac far too long (75-76 should've been enough) and not money whipping Bobby Bowden to BR?

My best TS memory. Dalton Hilliard juked and powered his way to something like 160 yards. Fog rolled in. Oranges rained down. Great night.

The 1981 game was a blowout. LSU lost 38-14.

Bowden was the leading candidate to succeed McClendon. Bowden wanted the job until Florida State beat LSU in ‘79. After that game, he felt he might be able to build a top program at Florida State because of that win, so he stayed.

LSU lost 16-0 in 1980. Not exactly a nail biter.

If I recall, the offer was $35,000. If we went to $42K we would"ve had him.

Your best TS memory is off by a year. The rain of oranges was in 1982, not 1981. Dalton Hilliard was a 1982 HS graduate (as was Garry James).

The 1982 game; I was in the north end zone for that one. One of the networks (ABC, I believe) wanted that for a national TV day broadcast, but LSU was determined to play this at night. Bobby Bowden was upset at the loss of TV revenue, since FSU was not in a conference at the time and didn't have to share revenue with any other schools. He was very public in his criticism of LSU's decision.

After we trounced them, a reporter asked if he still felt FSU would have won a day game. He replied that it would not have mattered. "LSU would have beaten us in the afternoon, night time, 2AM-didn't matter"

The LSU nation got to watch some truly great football players in Tiger Stadium and watch a future HOF coach on the rise.

It was a historic series and now part of our history as are games with ND, USC, Nebraska, Ohio State and Miami.

They weren’t making a whole lot more during the Hallman/DiNardo era, lord knows they didn’t deserve more. I used to bitch about the state of the program and would get the occasional “think you could do better?” My response was “absolutely, just not willing to take that much of a paycut.”

FSU used to be a doormat. They built their brand by playing so many road games like that.

I can’t even think of any teams that would do that these days.

The stretch from 89-91 (3 straight losses) was awful- probably made even worse by being a part of the worst downward spiral in LSU Football history....

We definitely owe them a loss. Several of them.

that was 1982, and I was there as a freshman.

Between the beat down on the field, the fog, and the oranges, it truly was one of the most unique and memorable nights in Tiger Stadium history.

FSU has caught LSU on the decline twice in the sereies. The first was 79-83 when FSU was ascending and LSU, after their new HC died before coaching a game in 1980 forced LSU to make an "emergency" hire. The second was 89-91 when LSU was beginning its worst stretch of football in decades...maybe ever.

Hopefully these next two games are the opposite with LSU back on the rise and FSU in the midst of its worst stretch of football in decades.
