When Auburn and LSU meet on the gridiron, catchy monikers for classic games seems to follow. The two teams have etched names like "The Earthquake Game," "The Upright Game," "The Hurricane Game" and "The Night the Barn Burned" into the SEC lexicon.
In 1994, the two teams met at Jordan-Hare Stadium on Sept. 17, 1994 in one of the wildest games in SEC history.
Auburn entered the game ranked No. 11 and riding a 14-game winning streak under second-year head coach Terry Bowden; while LSU entered with a 1-1 record.
LSU jumped out to a 23-9 lead going into the fourth quarter, but that's when the shenanigans started.
With 12:14 to play, LSU quarterback Jamie Howard threw late over-the-middle and was picked off by Ken Alvis. Alvis returned it to the five, rolled over Howard, who was attempting to make the touchdown-saving tackle, and reached over the goal line for the 41-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 23-16.
Just over a minute later Howard threw into triple coverage on 3rd-and-10 and was picked off by Fred Smith at the 32-yard line. Smith dove over two LSU Tigers into the end zone to tie the game at 23.
LSU then embarked on a 13-play, 70-yard drive that drained 5:42 off of the clock. But the drive stalled, and LSU settled for an Andre LaFleur field goal to give them a 26-23 lead.
Auburn went three-and-out and punted back to LSU with 3:42 to play. All LSU needed to do was bleed the clock to end Auburn's winning streak.
That didn't happen.
After Auburn used its last timeout to set up 3rd-and-4, Howard again threw into triple coverage. The ball was tipped and picked off by Brian Robinson, who cruised into the end zone to give Auburn the unlikely 30-26 lead.
But it wasn't over.
LSU quickly moved the ball into Auburn territory, but on 2nd-and-10 from the 25-yard line. Howard again threw into triple coverage and was again picked off by Robinson at the 10-yard line. Robinson was blindsided by an LSU wide receiver at the 30, the ball sprung loose, and LSU recovered it at the Auburn 47 with 44 seconds left.
After a completion got the Tigers to the Auburn 32, Howard went to the end zone, but the pass was intercepted by Chris Shelling to seal the game and cap off one of the most improbable comebacks in SEC history.

But back to 1959 after the great 7-3 OM win we go lose at a mediocre Tenn team; BC swore on his grave he was in for the 2 pt conversion.
All true -
I met Cannon out on a deer lease in the mid-80s. he still maintained he made it !!!

Billy Cannon’s Halloween run was 89 yards.
Odell Beckham Jr also had an 89 yard punt return against Ole Miss in the 10 minute range of the 4th quarter down the same sideline.

The crazy chain of events and miraculous run of luck Les had in 2007. #1 Missouri and #2 West Virginia (28-point favorite) both losing in the last week of the season, opening the door for a mildly retarded HC to win a national championship. The stress in watching that crazy bastard coach took years off my life.

1986-Bill Arnsparger coaches the Tigers to the SEC Championship and then moves on to be AD at UF. LSU interviews Steve Spurrier but instead hires Mike Archer. Steve Spurrier goes on to have one of the greatest runs in SEC history with UF in the 90’s and LSU went through it’s worst decade in program history.

YA Tittle’s pants falling down while returning an INT. Didn’t score a TD and eventually lost the game 20-18 to Ole Miss in 1947.

Not quite how that works. 22 out of the 25 had already signed on National Signing day. Then we added CB Alexander, K Tracy and the last open spot in the 25 went to Burrow. Had Surtain signed with LSU that last spot would not have been open.`Processing is not a part of that equation.
It’s true they couldn’t have processed anyone to pick up Burrow. The more likely scenario is they would not have taken Alexander if Surtain had signed. More than likely they had spots set aside for K and QB and only added the third because Surtain went to Bama.

Losing two games and playing in the national championship game, with one of those being in the final game of the regular season.

Boise State and Syracuse played a part getting LSU in the 2004 Sugar Bowl

Do you know what conspiracy theories are?
Bring Cecil Collins into a conversation that includes National Championship teams with Heisman trophy winners is borderline weird
A plane crash?
A player that switched schools

You left out Nick and Candy. It’s true.

Such a cool OP. Great work.
I think we've had more games impacted by hurricanes than any other school.
LSU used to be part of a doubleheader in Mississippi Memorial Stadium. We would play OM in the afternoon and State and Bama would play at night.
Phelon Jones is like 1 of 3 players to have NC rings from two schools:
Phelon (LSU '07, Bama in '09 and '11).
Cam (UF in '08 and AU '10)
Coker (FSU and Bama)

Tulane loss in 82 is worst point spread loss in LSU history, -27 and Tulane was 3-7 coming in. 82 team was 11 points away from 12-0 season.
Does anyone know the highest spread we were up against and ended up winning the game outright?
ETA my most educated guess would be the Pig's Fly game. I found this in an article.

1993, the heyday of the dread Curley Hallman era. That day, Alabama was a 24-point favorite...and lost...at home...to a 5-6 Tigers team. That’s just an historical note: don’t take it as apocryphal.

In 2020, Trey Palmer returned a kickoff for a TD in Tiger Stadium.
The last LSU player to return a kickoff all the way in Tiger Stadium before him?
Eric Martin in 1981.

I knew all of these things except the Cecil Collins rumor. That was not only the biggest waste of talent in LSU history but has to be in the conversation of the biggest waste of talent in the history of sports.
