The LSU run game will be better this year because…

…better depth at RB? Better overall run blocking? Better play calling?
Or maybe it won’t be better. I thought this was a glaring weakness on last year’s team but it’s hasn’t been discussed much as far as I can see. What is the general consensus for the run game this year going forward?

Even with a top 10 pick at tackle, last year’s OL was very overrated and they were the reason the run game was awful. If the run game improves, it’s because the OL got better at run blocking. OL play is way more important for run game success than RB talent.

OL has been rebuilt. We'll know more after Clemson for sure.

Better blocking from the tight ends and the center.

Our OC will either stop calling zone reads on every single 2nd and long or Nuss will take a huge leap forward in his cautious running ability

Hopefully this. Sloan was over his head last year as a 1st year playcaller and going from a mobile Heisman QB to 1st year starter pocket passer.

I have no idea.
I cant say confidently it will be better. Why shouldn't we have been able to run behind last years veteran anchored offensive line? That was on of the big disappointments of last year's offese. I expected so much more on the ground. Truth is, outside of Jayden Daniels the run game hasn't been particularly effective under Kelly. I dont know if its scheme, play design.
DJ Chester was a disruptor to runs up the middle last year. Maybe he'll improve in year 2 of starting. But then we get a less experienced line flanking him. So I don't know what to expect.

“We are excited about Alex and his addition to our staff,” Kelly said. “He brings a great deal of experience as a coordinator, but more importantly his depth and background in the run game as an offensive line coach, he adds another perspective in that room with (offensive line coach) Brad (Davis). Brad has done a great job. This is really having somebody who will coach the tight ends and have a specific focus towards our run game and how it matches with what I’m looking for in our overall offensive structure.
“Having somebody that is dedicated to that, having somebody that has his eye on it every day, I felt like where we are today, that was a great need. To get someone with his type of experience in building runs games, the need and the timing, make it a great fit.”

Nuss is going to have to use his legs more and keep defenses guessing just a little too

I truly believe one of the things that held us back last season was all of our o-line never played with their hand in the dirt. Hard to run block when you always start off higher then the guy you trying to block. Guess we’ll see in time.
I also think just cause we start the year not so good…doesn’t mean by the end we haven’t figured things out. With that said…let’s all hope we start off strong with our o line

Play calling was horrendous. Hopefully it’ll be less terrible.

It should be better with a better center. Chester might be a solid guard, but was not a good center.

If the running game isn't better this year, it's going to be a long season.

What don’t you guys get? The offense is designed to have 3 weapons at all times (not including the QB’s arm). The Running back, the receivers, and the QB’s legs. If Nuss is no threat to run, we will have another hard time running the ball. We were either passing the ball, or the running back was getting the handoff. That was the only 2 options. A QB keeper wasn’t in sight and never was on the defense mind.
How many times did you see teams send a man with Nuss when he “acted” like he was going to keep it? Probably could count on 1 hand. He has to absolutely run the ball to keep the defense honest. it has nothing to do with the O-Line blocking abilities. It looked worse than what it was.
It’s just 1 too many men in the box and perimeter to open up running lanes at will. 1 less man crashing down could make a huge difference if Nuss just tucks it here and there

That’s literally part of the RPO. If all hands are on the ground..that’s a dead giveaway for a run play
