The impact of the opening fumble is understated

That is a 3 possession swing. Not only do we give them the ball on our own 15-20, negate our first possession, we also lose the possession at the half. I have never seen special teams negatively effect the outcomes of games the way I have this year. It’s honestly amazing how well our D has performed considering they are almost always at a disadvantage in field position.

Game could have been very different if we deferred and held them to no points or a FG

It was a tone setter but Tennessee was going to get the ball back at the half anyway. And to say we would score on than first position is also a big IF

To me, it showed how unprepared & un-focused the team was, and really set the tone for the game. Special teams has been the absolute biggest deficiency on this team & single-handedly lost us the FSU game. Yet we come out a few weeks later against a top whatever team and can't even catch the opening fricking kickoff?! You've gotta be kidding me. Most teams don't have as many ST blunders in 1 year as we've had in 6 games.

Kick ball. Catch ball. Does that really require some special top secret coaching?

I remember Gene Stallings saying the opening kickoff can be the most impactful play of the game if there is a return call. He spoke about the impact of a hard tackle behind the 20 on a return and a crushing tackle that would dictate the game.

I’m pretty sure they’re coached to catch the ball. Bech probably saw a lane open and got ahead of himself

The same can be said if Bech catches the KO and LSU scores on the first drive.

Has anyone figured out why Bech was initially set up on the right side of the field (near student section) & switched to the left side & couldn’t get to the ball in time?

Switch happens at 2:21 in the video. Right before this BK was telling Bech to line up on the 5yd line on right side of field. Coaches screwed this up

That fumble seems like a complete coaching mishap on Polian (again). Did he not know which side they were kicking the ball to after choosing to receive the ball on opening kickoff?

The fumble, the 2 4th down decisions really changed the game. Sure the fumble started us in the hole. But the 2- 4th down decisions closed it shut. Imagine being able to run out the half with 3 extra points (first 4th daown) and not letting them score that TD before half (2nd 4th down). It would have been much more of a boost than what we did. And that's all on the head coaches inability to manage the clock and get points when they're available. It hurt us a lot.

Even bigger was the bye week for Tenn.

They're still the better team, IMO BUT not 27 points better.

Or we could just kick the field goal and the game would have been 10-3. That game was one mistake after another that compounded on one another. Players won't be perfect. Coaches have to be better than they were on Saturday.

It’s been more than that. Guys missing blocks on FGs, guys fielding punts inside the 10, return coverage has been terrible, guys fielding punts they need to just let go. That ST coach needs to be fired asap. Idc how good of a recruiter he is. No point in having a good recruiting coach if he’s going to lose you games on the field.

Or if we didn’t Muff The KO and scored a FG.

Polian is trying to overtake Pellini as most incompetent coordinator we've had the past 2 decades.

I think he lost it in the sun. LSU wasn't prepared for Tennessee to kick it high and short.

The 11AM start might have been a direct factor in LSU's horrible start.

I think the coaches realized that Tennessee had something up considering how they were rearranging the kick return right before the kick. Imagine the outrage if Kelly calls a time-out before the opening kickoff.

Yes. This was explained in the post game. BK said Tennessee has a good directional kicker and usually splits left and right about 50/50. The ball was blown over by the wind so UT used a holder. Based on the side the holder was on, they knew the ball was going to the right. “Bech is the best we got” per BK so he swapped him to the right.
