The Green Base

I’m not opposed to it being used all season long. I find it funny that the SEC has not shown the no call walk off collision between us and bama when it’s been discussed, as evidence of it being a good addition.

Don't want to show the incompetence of the umpire crew and replay crew.

I like it. There is no excuse now if the runner gets hit. Should be automatic out.

You think it should be an automatic out if the catcher hits the runner with the ball?

I do not think there is a real need for it, but not opposed to it being a permanent thing.
I caught the tale end of Schlosnagle discussing it on the ESPN set last night, and I didn't realize there were additional rules associated with it such as the white base belongs to the fielder and the green belongs to the runner and if a runner hits the white and not green bag he technically never touched first and can be tagged/called out on appeal. I assumed it was treated as one large base, but apparently not. I also assume that only applies if there is an actual play at first and not on an extra base hit where the runner steps on the white base on his way to second?

If he isn't in the running lane, it is. But that is what this is supposed to help prevent.

Why does it have to be a base? Why can’t it be flat like home plate?
Posted on 5/22/24 at 8:25 pm to RockChalkTiger
The green base in the A&M game looks closer to home than the standard base. And that was a close play.

Instead of green base why not go to the larger base that mlb uses
It would have a similar effect

So the umpire can see the base as the runners foot touches it. A flat plate is usually being slid into on close plays. That’s not how it works at first base.

Actually never thought about it but that would be epic. Like kickball.
I always hated this play in baseball but this could completely change my outlook =-)

I understand that, the rule hasn’t changed. His wording is confusing me.

Correct, they were discussing it yesterday I believe in the LSU game or maybe it was the SC/Bama game.
But let’s say a ground ball is hit to the SS and is bobbled or mishandled and goes to the outfield, the runner does not have to touch the green base. But if there’s a play to be made in the infield, the runner must touch the green base

Get rid of it; it is ridiculous.

So if the first baseman comes down on the green base it’s automatically safe? Does that mean if they touch any part of the green base it’s automatically safe?
Since the bases are connected does it remove one side of the base for the first baseman to touch.

LSU is 2-0 with the green base...I vote for keeping it!!

Another rule with this green base is that if anyone makes a throw that pulls the first baseman off the bag to where he cuts in front of the runner, the runner is allowed to avoid the fielder and touch the white base if that's his only lane. Which is a very common sense rule, I think.
I don't think there's a real need for this base, either, but it's one of the few changes baseball has attempted to make in recent years that wasn't awful, and clearly detrimental to the game.
