It seems like a lot of people are really down on him being on the staff on this site. I understand that 80% of the downvotes are people just following a trend, but surely 20% have a legitimate argument. While he was here, we had damn good recruiting, and we were known as DBU. Whereas today you see the results. What am I missing? Serious question.

Did you see the results in 2020 and 2021? He got lazy while demanding more money every year. People soured on him for that.

And he bombed out completely at Florida.

The issue is that while he’s a great recruiter, he’s always been an average coach. So at the end when he became a lazy recruiter, people grew to dislike him.

He isn't a great recruiter. Unless you like the king of second place. His last few recruiting classes left us with 2 CBs on the entire roster.

He got lazy in recruiting and developing.

Maybe that's because Orgeron was a joke, maybe not.

Thing is, with Baker, Peoples, and Davis now on staff, we can afford to hire a coach that might not be the best recruiter, but is an excellent developer of talent.

LSU really only has 2 coaching vacancies available if Diaco keeps his current role and still handles special teams and outside linebackers to help Baker. You've still got to fill spots for OC, TE, and the secondary.

I think we're getting another offensive coach, so we need a rockstar that can develop safeties and corners extremely well.

ETA: and Raymond is going to demand a premium. We've already got $11.5 million in defensive staff, NOT INCLUDING any buyout amount, and I can't find any pay information for Peoples.

Caught tidbits from other posters in other threads about Raymond as he's been a hot--and hotly debated--topic:
++ Because 2 years of DBs at Florida were dreadful under CR as their Coach

++ Because he held LSU hostage during his time here--threatening 2 leave and getting more $$$ (insiders will know much more; I was unaware of that scenario)

++ Because he no longer wants 2 recruit (see "CBs at UF were dreadful for 2 years" note)

++ Because his last 2-3 years at LSU were not good (with the caveat made x those those posters that it's tough to separate/assign blame when Orgeron rocketed the entire FB program into the sewer just 1 yr after a Natty)

++ Because he's a "retread"--but given Kelly brought back Baker and Bo Davis this is not a logical argument

++ Because he's old and would likely leave in 2 seasons anyway so why shouldn't LSU get a "younger Corey Raymond" to provide DBU stability and prevent LSU + Woodward shelling out even MILLION$$$$$ more since they already are blowing wads left and right (paraphrasing there!)

Who was on staff that made the current coaching staff rely heavy on the portal the first two years? Why was there no depth of JR and SR players in the Defensive Back Postion? Why did Kelly had to rely on freshmen and sophomores to contribute this year? Why hasn’t a LSU DB not been drafted since the 2019 HS recruiting cycle? That should answer your question.

Give him a pass here. CR loves LSU. CR loves Louisiana. Reportedly butted heads with Sunbelt Billy.

As far as 2020-2021? Covid/Natty hangover for the whole program. CEO takes 80% of the blame here letting things get so bad.

His last 2 years sucked. Not only did his position group underperform but he had multiple players outright quit on the team.

Then he goes to Florida and was so bad even sunbelt Billy didn’t want him around.

All of those things can be true but he's still going to demand an outrageous salary.

Also true is that Aranda didn't trust him to coach safeties. If we're going to wipe out the last 4 years of his career, it's also fair to point out that he hasn't coached safeties since 2017.

Wait, what? Give him a pass for two years of failure? Butting heads prevented him from doing his job?

Okay, Orgeron/Covid/Natty Hangover caused plenty of problems for 2020-21.

But why Aranda feel the need to hire Busch in 2018?

While true to an extent, 2020 and 21' were a reflection of the HC and a toxic culture that took over the program.

Raymond’s success was a direct result of Les Miles and his recruiting and Dave Aranda’s coaching direction. When Aranda left he was lost and his defensive backfield was awful when we really needed him to be a legitimate force. Bo Pelini exposed him as a position coach. It continued after Pelini was fired. Florida hires him and he was cut loose there for the same reasons.
