Why not, we did it for stingley his freshman year, and the honey badger his sophmore year.
? Aranda always used man coverage at LSU. Stingley fit into that defense like a glove. I'd say the same for Mathieu in Chavis' scheme. The 'mustang' spot worked perfectly for him in part because Claiborne/Taylor/Reid/PP7/Simon were good enough to give TM7 the freedom to roam around and ball. But most importantly Mathieu was and still is an exceptionally smart football player. Like on a level you rarely see.
ILB is a different animal entirely to playing DB. It asks a lot mentally of the player and discipline is a lot of times more important than just being the best athlete. Perkins was not an every down linebacker in HS. It's not a position he's used to playing, and just like with Devin White it sometimes takes a year before they're fully acclimated to play that position.
Ojulari is not great at stopping the run. He is a true pass rusher. If you moved him to Ali Gaye's spot our defense would be gashed on the ground. Until Perk is more comfortable playing on the inside, it wouldn't make sense to have them both on the field at the same time outside of your pass rush packages on third down.

Showed tremendous promise in his first year at LSU. He hasn’t progressed since. Now, he’s a “first guy off the bus” kinda guy

m so tired of seeing this shite. Do y'all really think he wouldn't be out there all the time if the coaches had faith he could do it? Using him as a Sam on third downs is similar to what aranda did with White his freshmen year. Just give it time.

Let’s see what happens after the bye week. I have a feeling getting Perkins some additional snaps in the middle will be a priority, in addition to using him to spell BJ on the edge.

Plus Kiffin literally said 3 times in the press conference that #40 was the difference that stopped them.
No, not at all. Kiffen didn’t say anything like that. He was complimentary to #40, yes. But if you actually followed the press conference, he talked about the end zone interception, penalties and poor tackling as the isssues.
Just sayin’

So is it safe to say the coaches have put away the idiotic idea of not putting Perkins on the field because he doesn’t fit the scheme?

Gaye hasn’t had a very good season up to now. I agree Gaye out fir Perkins

saw one half yesterday where Perkins played 10% of snaps, the defense allowed 300 yards and 20 points I saw another half yesterday where Perkins played 90% of snaps, the defense allowed 70 yards and 0 points
They quit running the ball dude that’s what changed to be able to let him pass rush only

Perkins can’t set the edge like gaye he’s too small
I can guarantee that doesn’t happen
He’s gonna spy or blitz as the Sam walked up when teams are pass heavy

Ole Miss was winning at half
Perkins was on field immediately in Ojulari’s position The first play of the 2H
Gaye came off the field on 3rd down & BJ came in

I used to think our fans were knowledgeable, until all of the discussions about Perkins demonstrated they have no clue what the difference is between an ILB and an OLB. I used to think the Trindon Holliday suggestion as a DE was a joke, sadly it wasn't.

Oh the irony. We’re not playing a 3-4, we’re playing a 3-3-5 stack with a smallish 5 tech up front. BJ walks down as a rusher 95% of the time and makes it really a 4-2 front with both LBs playing inside the end. Those 2 LB positions are nearly identical in responsibility outside of one of em making calls.

I think most people have beef with Perkins not being able to get on the field over Penn. who might have been all conf 15 years ago. But he isn’t built for this spread-out brand of football

Just glad we put the kid out there instead of sitting obvious 400 pound gorillas with a chainsaw for a penis like Chief did with Kendall Beckwith in favor of the son of Thomas Dunson himself…DJ Welter…
Yes that still pisses me off.
But don’t think competent OC’s and competent players won’t scheme right at what they see on tape that creates one dimensional calls or lack of understanding of the playbook.
Right now Perkins athleticism and play making are great when we can dictate to the other team how they move the ball on offense. Our offensive productivity forced Ole Miss to lean pass more and more, allowing Perkins onto the field more and more.
They were more predictable. They playbook shrank. In our-and Perkins’-favor.
If you just Chuck him out there, good teams will use him as a constraint.
Huepel and Saban are good teams with good coaches and can do that. He will see more and more based on his learning curve. For now…patience and enjoy a Damn W.

This isn’t what happened at all

He’s been better than Penn vs the run and the pass plus he can rush the passer and spy the QB. It should be Baskerville and Perk starting at LB.

after what we watched against Tenn and OM first half without Perkins, is seems apparent that the schemes and players by House can safely be said to NOT BE WORKING. Can LSU please stop throwing out that lame excuse for not playing him. 5 times LSU has started games like pure crap on defense. It is time to prepare before the game and not just rely on making great adjustments at halftime. Start playing a full game on defense for the rest of the season. That, quite obviously, means as much of 40 and 11 as possible.

The results speak for themselves and drown out the arguments and excuses for not playing him. We haven’t lost a game when he’s played regular snaps, he completely changed the game yesterday and he bottled up Richardson in the 4th quarter of last weeks game as a spy. Until someone exposes these so called weaknesses he should be out there.

He completely missed a TE in the flat against Florida that would've resulted in a touchdown had the player not dropped it. No one is saying he's not an unbelievably gifted football player, and I wouldn't be surprised if his snaps inside increased in the coming weeks. But when he is being used almost entirely to rush the passer/play spy it's not like you're guaranteed to get the same results by putting a bunch more responsibility on his plate.
