I made a post about the decline of Tiger Stadium back in 2018, and people booking out of there at halftime. And people posted several reasons:

No Alcohol
Traffic
Offensive Philosophy
Team Record and Ranking
Blowout
Heat
Parties

But if you really want to know why people leave early you just need to ask the students. It’s that simple.

I watched the LSU student section empty against LATECH that season in the 3rd quarter and the game was 24-14.

It was a 6:00 kickoff. Student section was empty at 8:15.

Now where were they going?

When should the student section ever empty?

Same place they were going on Saturday…getting the Hell out of there.

It is a terrible tradition that they started about 10 years ago, but it is alive and well.

The student section was packed Saturday and many stuck it out in the sun and heat. I’ve noticed that the student section seems livelier post Covid season, honestly.

Saturday was a brutal day for a football game. Quit hating on the fans.

Student section was packed in the first half, and fairly decent for the second half.

Everyone just needs to accept that Tiger Stadium is only at its peak about 1-3 times a year.

Also, losing the season opener is a buzz kill for attendence for the non-marquee games imo.

Do the fraternity pledges not stay and stand the whole game anymore?

I swore they showed some there so not totally empty. Pussies get away with no coats these days though.

All the boys would rather be sitting on their couch playing video games.

Those boys were there until the end. They all wear khakis, white shirts, and ties.

They expanded a stadium to make it more impressive and hold for those big top 5 Saturday night games…. when really only about 75-80k wanna be there every weekend…. So yea add on a hot day that even back at 88-92k max capacity would be 75% full…. And then come a second half when 50% of those leave and 45k are spread across 101k seats… it’s gonna look empty….

I would agree that they NEVER should have added on to the South End zone.

But once again what does demand have to do with the Student Section?

It’s not really about calling people out. I really am curious what happened…because it looks like other places don’t clear out especially the Students.

They couldn’t care less. They have been there and done that. They are going to go, but they won’t stay.

Even If it was a Night game student section still empties on Saturday.

The thing that earned TS's reputation was nights and noise. As a case in point, the SI (not a fan of) issue after the '71 ND game speaks to this. That was 53 years ago. We had already lost three games (Colorado, OM, and Bama) when we played ND. Our season was largely a disappointment by then. But TS would not disappoint. To be fair, TS still has its moments of glory.

I realize the OP is focusing on the student section and not the crowd in a broader sense but some of the factors affect both.

IMO, the single biggest factor is TV. Then, you had to be in TS to see the Tigers play. Now, you can watch every play of every game from home.

The LSU Admin is limited as to how much they can do. We cannot afford to forego the lucrative intake from TV nor as part of the SEC. We have to play by their rules. OTOH, everything they have done is sanitize TS and make it like every other venue.

So this generation of students I suppose it woefully unaware of what earned TS its reputation.

I have TAF tickets in the student section and had been going to games since 1981, but have been selling my tickets to a Tiger fan since 2016. The last straw for me was the buzz-killing delay during TV time-outs. I really got to hate the “red-hat guy” who walks onto the field for the timeouts.

The girls have their e-vices as well and so do many not in the student section.

The wifi and cell service on campus is HORRIBLE.

We can't send texts, we can't check scores of other games, forget social media or streaming, etc.

No, it won't make it cooler and that was the biggest problem on Saturday but the fact that year after year they want to address butts in seats and won't address that glaring issue is puzzling.

And yet year after year, game after game you and others keep starting new threads about fans leaving early. This is the way it is. Not changing. These threads are so tiresome. Find something else to bitch about.

The Student Section was packed until halftime then it emptied out. They were in the sun quite a bit of the game so I can't blame any of them for leaving.

If you are specifically talking about Saturday it was hot as balls in that student section that people were dropping like flies. Many people left after the end of the first quarter because to get a seat in the student section you have to get there at least 45 minutes early so at that point many of us had been there for almost 2 hours. It also didn't help that around half time they also ran out of water in the concession stands near the student section.

Now for your general game, everyone leaves to make the walk from the stadium to the bar at halftime. Outside of the big games like Alabama I would not expect this to change.

Being an old fart LSU alumni I,we, never even thought of leaving before the end of the game.(68-71) As for no alcohol that was what your dates' purse was for.As a matter of fact the whole student social calandar centered around Tiger football season.

Average game time length in the 70s was right at 2 hours 45 minutes

The fans stay the same amount of time now on average

Meh…. The football players are basically employees these days they shouldn’t need people cheering them on to do their job. The students and their families are paying the bill so if they want to wipe their arse with the tickets they can.

Always wore a sport coat to TS as a student. The two inside lapel pockets are specifically made to bring a pint flask each into the stadium.
