I'm almost 77, my wife is 76, this week I'm going to test drive a Tesla model Y, intend on paying $100 a month for self driving. My skills are still pretty good, but my neck is fused, so my mobility is limited, I have to plan my routes. That's why my car barely gets 3K miles annually.

My wife's skills have never been great, she has never had a serious accident, but several minor ones that are a red flag. Now is the time to get the steering wheel out of her hands, before she hurts herself or someone else.

I've never been at fault in an accident, about 10 years ago I was rear ended at a stoplight, before that was in 1973. If I never drive again, I won't miss it a bit.

The same rule should apply to politicians that applies to commercial airline pilots: Mandatory retirement at 65.

An elderly man in my neighborhood was backing out of his driveway yesterday. Never looked back to check for traffic. He just went for it. I had to slam my brakes to avoid hitting him.

We had an 90 yo here hit a walker and kill her. They found the driver at the grocery confused and hadn’t realized she had run over anyone. She ended up getting charged with manslaughter

My grandpa is nearing 90, he still drives when he needs to, but doesn't drive for much other than doctors appointments or if he wants to go to a grandkids game and no one is around to take him with them. That being said, regardless of what road he is on or the speed limit of said road, he never goes above 55.

This problem will fix itself. Self driving cars are coming in masses...

Very good call. You won't regret it.

Don't act like all 70 year olds are like that. Drive a car, shite, I still work on them, computers and all. Don't put us all in one basket. BTW, I'm 70 as well.

Judging by the way people of ALL ages drive, everyone should have to retake the test every 2 years.

Every poster suggesting shutting down elderly drivers, needs to back that up by committing to run errands for the elderly on a daily basis. Its a real problem.

I’ve always said, there needs to be a reflex / reaction time component to the driving test and not simply vision.

Regardless of age, if you can’t react quickly, you don’t need to be driving.

I know in Alabama they have license plates for a certain subset of individuals that automatically tell me to be on the defensive and to expect that person to be going well below the speed limit as well.

Good luck trying to enforce this against elderly people. They’re the strongest, most vocal and consistent voting block that exists. And every politician know this. That’s why it’s never been done. And won’t until the population curve of the boomer wave is on the backside.
