This did not look like a top 20 defense this year with the eye test. Did not see it against UGA, Bama or Ole Miss
People need to remember that the offenses are getting a lot better in cfb. Lots of high scores and yards gained. That's how a seemingly porous defense like LSU's can end up 20th

This years 20th ranking average of 349.7 yards per game would have been 34th in 2011
In 2011 the SEC had 4 of top 5 and 5 of 10 defenses in the country. This year 1 of top 5 and 2 top 10.
Have the offenses caught up with the defenses or have the defenses fallen off?
ETA: Also this years defense gave 4+ more points a game than last year.

30th in scoring defense, and 21st in scoring offense. These are the ones that matter at the end of the day.
Giving up 23 points a game (5th in the SEC) isn't something to really celebrate, but LSU had some bright spots on the season.
Youth was a key issue, but some coaching decisions were as well. We'll see next year if the youth isn't as big of an issue.
Just for reference:
LSU's 2013 defense:
350 ypg
23 ppg
LSU's 2008 defense: (considered the worst of the Miles era by many)
326 ypg
24 ppg
They gave up less yards and all of 1 point more per game in 2008.

If Iowa can run the ball, game on in the Outback Bowl.

Our offense failed its final drive, with ample time. Just sayin...
Your offense couldn't run the ball on Georgia.
That probably played a huge role in your team's loss.

I think we give our defense a little too much shite.
We only gave up a bunch of points 2 times, and Bama and UGa are two of the best teams in the country.
besides that not a terrible season, and we did play some good offenses.
And as far as Arkansas running on us, they have the 20th best rushing attack in the country.
They only do 2 things well, run the ball, and rush the passer.

Interesting stats, but what stood out the most was the inconsistency of the defense.
For example they shut down Manziel but weren't able to slow down teams like Ole Miss and Arky.

the defensive stats are skewed due to playing the mid-major teams. this defense is pretty bad
As others have said, everyone else plays mid-majors, too. But beyond that, if you look at LSU sitting at 26th in total offense, there are still five SEC teams with higher ranked offenses... and LSU had to play 4 of them. I think that more than offsets any statistical advantage the lesser teams provided.
Not saying the defense was great; there was/is room for improvement, but the defense isn't "pretty bad". It just seems that way because the offense improved so drastically and there was the sense that LSU really could have won every game they played this year. The defense could have helped more in at least a couple of those games, but the truth is that not playing mistake-free football (turnovers & penalties) had as much or a larger role than the defense in every loss.

Defense seemed more like 50th than 20th.

i think its just a sign of the times. It is going to be harder and harder to defend in college with these offenses that spread you out and the fact that teams go for style points and will put up 70 to look better when the other team puts up 50. Add that we had some really good qbs in the sec this year and our d looked shitty, but so did everyone else around the country minus a couple of teams.
Yeah and truly looking back, the d cost us the uga game. Turnovers from the offense cost us the ole miss and bama games. So we sling the ball more, your qb is bound to throw more ints just by law of averages. he just decided to throw 3 to the same team and that cost us.

That is a solid and well balanced team.

Damn...the other hundred defenses in the county must've really sucked.
Seriously though, to have the losses we had on D, and to still be a top twenty defense is pretty sweet. Should just be better next year...I hope.

20th is quite an impressive accomplishment considering how many starters that were replaced this season with very inexperienced players. 2014 and 2015 are going to be good seasons.
Cam's impact on the offense is going to pay great dividends. I look forward to the Bowl to see Jennings in a full game.

Wow.. 350 yds allowed/game gets you a Top 20 defense in today's game. Shows how much the game has changed.
