Some individual player thoughts from Men's BB game last night

Just my thoughts on some players upon watching/rewatching the game from last night.
Dent - This guy is probably the most important piece to our team this year being he is a very high level ball handler and we simply dont have that with anyone else on the team. He is obviously very talented, had 19 points, 10 assists and 0 turnovers last night....but he also played the most minutes of anyone and I think you see that as a trend this year. He is so important to making the offense work and you saw when he wasn't in there the offensive play did suffer a bit with Bashir/Ugochukwu and Clark kind of pulling some duty as ball handlers. Dent is not going to light up draft boards, but he is absolutely an elite level college basketball player and IMO the 1 guy we cant afford to lose this season. We were +43 when he was on the floor last night, the best of any player.
Niang - Talk about a pretty disappointing debut in the exhibition against FSU only to turn around one of the most dominant halfs I've seen from a college basketball player last night in 1st half. He had 14 points, 10 boards, 6 steals and 2 assists in 11 minutes in the 1st half, that's nuts. The dude is probably one of the best defenders in college I've ever seen. He is going to frustrate any player we put him on outside of maybe guarding the post on 7 footers probably. High high high level defensive player who just uses his athleticism to generate offense. You can see why he was draft a while back the potential there. He should not be playing college basketball right now.
Dessert - Another somewhat disappointing exhibition against FSU turned more impressive first real game with his 13 points, 7 boards in 18 minutes. On the downside the turnover spree continued with 4 and he fouled out in 18 minutes. Now the refs were absolutely whistle happy in this one which hurt Dessert for sure, but he needs to watch that this season still. He is WAY WAY bigger than I thought he would be here. I believe he is every bit of 260-270 right now at 7 feet. He was hyped up to be a nice athlete for his size but I wonder if the extra weight might be holding him back a bit now. Honestly I do expect more of him and he was the more hyped of the big men coming in between him and Ruzic.
Ruzic - I dont know if this guy will be coming off the bench much longer. Flat out in the exhibitions and this game he's been pretty consistently high level to elite. He just looks so comfortable out there and while he might be a downgrade defensively compared to Dessert he is a pretty big upgrade offensively right now IMO. He certainly isnt lacking much on defense either, the effort level is there.
Dioubate/Clark/Bashir/Ugochukwu - I think its getting more clear this group is your role players of the main rotation of 8 guys. Not to say any of them are average or bad, but they each bring a certain role to this team overall and is really what we need from them ultimately. These arent necessarily going to be your central "oh wow" players this season, although game ot game could have some good ones here and there. Would you believe Clark had 0 points in 30 minutes last night? Seems hard to believe, but it happened. He had 21 ripping 7 3's against FSU in the exhibition, I feel like he will be hot/cold like that throughout the season. Bashir clearly is in there to shoot 3s, handle the ball a little and not required much else. Ugochukwu is that guard "all arounder" type who isnt necessarily great at any 1 thing but can do it all for you at a decent enough level. Dioubate the same as a forward basically. nothing Dioubate does is necessairly pretty but "it all adds up" at the end of the game.
Levy - Obviously he finally got to play some last night and I stand by my we have 8 in the rotation with guys like him and Nunez if he ever gets healthy being those "emergency minute" guys when we have foul trouble or injuries to the above 8 guys. He is obviously a giant at 7'3, moves OK enough for a guy his size but would get run out the gym against a team that can run at all and is athletic. He could be fine for some short bursts but he was already looking slowed down a by playing less than 5 minutes at the end of the game last night. It's always fun to watch a dude his size drain a 3 though, and crazy this is where basketball is at these days where 2-3-4 decades a go, it was crazy to ever see 7+ footers take a 3. Also hilarious he doesnt even jump off the ground on his layups.

After attending last night's game, I believe you have given a very accurate summary of each player. Well done.

Is there any concern with the overall athleticism of our bigs? Obviously against inferior competition won't be an issue, but I have to see them against the monsters of the SEC....

Clark gives Marcus Thorton a run for his money for baggiest shorts in an LSU uniform

I would love a 9 man rotation personally

Ruzic, no. He is very fluid and moves like a wing. He seems to have a good feel for spacing and runs the floor extremely well for a big.
Dessert isn't nearly as athletic, but moves well for a guy 7-0 265. I don't think he'll be out front on a ton of fast breaks this season, but he doesn't look like a big oaf out there.

I'd like to see Nunzez get healthy and involved. Then I think you have excellent and experienced depth at every position. This team will only get better as a TEAM. But all the elements are there for success. I think it was 68-18 .... I don't care who you are playing. That's elite

Levy looked so slow and lost on rebounds

Ruzic is pretty athletic and ran the floor really well. Hes also just got a great feel for the game. I was very impressed.
I think he and Dent are our two most important pieces.

Agree, Dioubate will start because we only have 2 true forwards on the team and he’s one of them. The Clark/Bashir/Ugo mix is the interesting one to me. IMO Bashir fits the best with the starting 5 regardless of Dessert or Ruzic as the big. Teams chase Bashir who has a quicker trigger, more range, more natural scoring ability and is much bigger than Clark. You could see early on in the game last night how flat the defense played us with Clark out there, who is a fine shooter but more of a spot up guy who likes to have his toes as close to the line as possible. He’s also your 2nd best option at PG and if you paired him with Ugo it would allow Ugo to play more natural as a slasher/finisher. I think for the mix of the team Bashir > Clark.

Good assessment. Dent is the most important player. Niang is a Swiss Army knife. He will continue to improve. Ruzic in my opinion is the most gifted player on the team and has more NBA potential than anyone on the roster. I know it is just one game against an inferior opponent, but it feels so good to have some juice around the BB program.
Early signing for basketball starts one week from today!

We are in trouble if we play him 5-10 minutes a night. He is slow and awkward. It takes him an inordinate amount of time to turn and get ready for a rebound once the shot goes up. Doesn’t seem to have much of a vertical. Really skinny legs and ankles for a guy his size.
His three point shooting technique was his best attribute. Can he help for a minute or two in spots? Maybe.

I disagree with you on Clark. He had an off night last night for a couple of reasons, but believe he will consistently be one your top scorers and better defensive guards.

Set some very good screens and runs the floor well for a guy that size. Is goofy and isn’t super instinctive but he isn’t going to play 10 minutes, he’ll be used sparingly when we’re up against a very big guy and either Ruzic or Dessert are in foul trouble. He’ll also play in games like last night during mop up time.

Agreed.
If he continues to get stronger, I could definitely see him being a big bench contributor in the NBA.
He just seems to understand the floor really well and is very polished with the ball in his hands. Ran the court really, really well for a 7' pure center.

and I don't like being this harsh on a guy that is so young and is just getting started with us but He is slow, has hard hands, looks uncoordinated and confused under the rim. He seems like he is not all that athletic and is strictly where he is because he won the genetic height lottery. Maybe you can polish him up around the rim a little but I am not sure he is really gifted enough athletically to improve to the point of being a consistent contributor

Two glue guys that hustle, get rebounds, and play high energy defense at their position. You need those on a good team.

We already have 2 7 footers that will be playing a ton and are frankly way better, I just see no need for him to ever really play unless they get into foul trouble, get hurt or it's just a blowout by the end of the game (like last night).
You play your best guys, and thats what Wade will do unless forced to otherwise.

Great assessment. Ruzic is much better than Dessert. Dessert moves in slow motion and will struggle against athletic bigs in the SEC. I think he will stay in foul trouble and turn the ball over a lot against good teams.
If Levy gets any legitimate minutes we are in trouble.

the main thing this team needs right now is practice and on court time together
Gonzaga will be a real test to see how far they've come with a brand new team
the non conf schedule will get this team ready for SEC play and figure out which combinations work best
Even Queens Hofstra and High Point are non conf teams that are gonna win a lot of games and are gonna test LSU, typical Wade schedule
