I think people are sleeping on levy a little bit

A 7’3 guy who can shoot the 3 doesn’t come around often

He won’t play a ton but I could see him getting some sec action

I disagree with you on Clark. He had an off night last night for a couple of reasons, but believe he will consistently be one your top scorers and better defensive guards.

Clark averaged 11.5ppg last year as a 22 year old senior at UCLA. He is simply not going to be a main piece to this team like the other 4 guys I mentioned. Yes, he will absolutely have some FSU like super hot from 3 nights, he can shoot the 3, but when you go o'fer in 30 minutes against a team like New Orleans, I think that is telling in terms of role. He will be hot/cold but not a 15+ppg guy or anything on average. He had some big games at UCLA last year, he also had 12 games under 10 points (only played in 26 games). He is good for what his role is on the team, dont see him being a "main player" consistently though. He works with Dent and thats why he is starting, they have the chemistry.

I think you are downplaying the contributions needed For this team to be good:

Clark has to consistently be an offensive hub, and be one of your top 3-4 leading scorers
Diabate has to be one of your leading rebounders and best defenders
Bashir needs to be your top 3pt guys

To that point, we need this team to get chemistry together pretty quickly. I think that what either limits us this year or takes us far. They need to gel.

Barring injury, I think we'll just get better and better throughout the year.

I wouldnt fool some fun uncontested 3s at the end of a blowout as anything but that

If he ever had to play hotly contested minutes in an SEC game (I dont think he ever will, again unless pressed into action for injury/foul trouble reasons) and he fired up a 3, he would probably go right back on the bench immediately.

In blowouts, sure. I dont see Dessert/Ruzic giving away any minutes to him in a competitive game where they arent hurt/in foul trouble. Again theres a reason Levy didnt enter the game until the final 5 minutes last night, he's not being thought of as part of any rotation. The rotation is 8 guys very clearly. There are some very very obvious drawbacks to him being on the court, very much a lot slower than basically anyone else on the court is a huge drawback when you start playing good teams.

I mean they are all role players effectively which is what I explained. In any 1 night Clark might drop 20, but follows it up with a 4 point game the next game. He's not a consistent scorer and never has been. When he's hot, you let him cook, similar to Bashir, but again, these guys arent going to be the "core" of the team in terms of doing a lot of things well. They just arent the NBA talented guys like the other 4 I mentioned in the end. They serve very specific roles which are great to fit this team, and they will hit those roles well most of the time, but we will mostly live and die by what Ruzic/Dent/Niang/Dessert do as so much is ultimately expected of them.

Dent may not get the NBA pub the others get but its very clear the dude is a super high level college PG. If he were a few inches taller maybe would get some some NBA talk more.

Pretty spot on thunder - i'm in agreement with your assessment.

It's always hard to make accurate assessments of individual and team play given the level of competition and I did not see the FSU game so this is all I have - but even in that context I don't see how anyone can come away being anything but impressed and excited about Ruzic.

I had fairly high expectations for Dent and he did not disappoint but my expectations for Ruzic were exceeded and then some.

Question for those who know such things-How do they match up in the SEC? Is this a competitive team that can win SEC road games? What are their comparative strengths and weaknesses?

Clark's uniform was the only disappointing part of the night for me. He is already short, and wearing shorts that end right above his ankles only makes him look even shorter.

And for the love of god, pick up your damn shorts. If your shirt can't even stay tucked in because your pants are too low, then pick them up.

I was probably irrationally annoyed by this last night.

I don’t think we truly know that he can yet. The sample size is just way too small at this point. His shot looks solid, but I’m not ready to say it’s good enough to warrant regular minutes.

lol no way. I agree Dent looks like the guy. But the 3 guys i mentioned and the 3 other guys on your list all have to equally contribute if they want to be good. They are all in the same category.

Most of these guys cannot create offense for themselves, especially in the half court. Clark can. Bashir can help everyone by spreading the floor. Niang will not score much outside of transition. Dessert has a lot of work to do to play long, meaningful stretches in an SEC game. They will all be equally counted on to contribute in their own way.

We are very talented and I'd say a top 6 team in the SEC talent wise. Team is long and athletic and should be solid on D which will help us on the road if shots aren't falling. Strengths would be size, PG play making ability, and depth at center. Weaknesses would be depth at forward and lack of shooting with certain lineups on the floor.

In a close game and LSU needs a 3 pointer at the end of regulation, is Levy one of the guys on the court? He very well may be, along with Dent, Clark, Bashir and Ruzic.

I see it how you see it.

Ruzic has to play tons of minutes. He looks like the best big we have.

Dent is probably the most important player we have and the best PG we've had in a long time.

Niang is our most talented playmaker/scorer.

I agree we are 8 deep.

Clark scored 0 points in 30 minutes against New Orleans and we dropped 100 on them, I dont know how much else to bluntly put it there, but Clark just isnt the same type of player as the main 4 in the end. He fills a very specific role much like Bashir with the 3 point shooting, and you ride them when their hot, but theres going to be a lot of times they arent hot as well. More than half these guys shots are from 3 in their recent career, and typically thats not ever something you would say is consistent and you LEAN on as a team. They will have 7/10 nights and 1/10 nights.

Niang obviously isnt a skilled offensive player but his defense might be the best of any LSU player in the past decade+, he can rebound at a very high level, guard almost anyone and is athletic enough he will still drop ~10 most nights offensively.

Dessert for sure to me has been disappointing some early on, but you can see the high level talent there and his overall game he has. I do think the extra weight he has put on could be something they look into and get him shedding some of that because he's way more athletic in his film from the recent past when he wasnt 265-270 or whatever he is at right now (maybe 240-250ish). Definitely have to watch him in games where the refs are whistle happy like last night.

Hard to tell this early on compared to the SEC as we're just getting started and so many teams are very new not completely unlike ours.

If our core 8 guys stay healthy, we are as good of an 8 against almost anyone in the conference and can beat anyone. That being said, staying healthy is going to be the biggest piece we have to watch out for in the team this year to have that kind of success. If we lose Dent, like I said in OP, the dynamic of the team changes dramatically. You lose a key role player from the other group I talked up, you dont necessarily have anyone to step into that role and fill it either, you're just trying to do it with 7 guys instead of 8 and filling in time with what you can in Nunez/Levy from there, and Nunez/Levy are a severe, severe step down from any of the main rotating 8.

I know we all thought he was a longshot but if RJ Luis was eligible this team I would argue could be best in the conference, and gives you a great rotating 9 which gives you some injury leeway.
