6 of the 9 players in the lineup tonight either played for Mainieri or signed/committed to Mainieri before Johnson was hired.

Those six are not what’s making this team special. That’s Holman, Jump, Anderson and Hurd, plus the rest of the pitching staff. And I’ll throw in Tommy White and Milam.

I was a Paul Mainieri fan, but he got lazy as hell at recruiting and caused a lost decade at LSU, during which we were a good team but never great.

The subject of the thread and the post that comment was a reply to wasn’t “what makes this team special?”, but your completely random off topic post stil mentions two Mainieri commitments.

It is a good sign of where we are as a program Nationally

This kind of thing comes and goes. When I was at LSU in 1989, Bianco was our only starter from Louisiana (not counting pitchers).

I mean 3 of those guys are still on the team but we definitely lack some of those Louisiana native program guys.

Travinski is 1 but Beloso and Dugas were 5th and 4th year guys making major contributions.

Like some people have said we’re definitely talented but we’re 2-4 years behind in development than some of those guys.

Don’t forget that the new transfer rules and NIL facilitate a lot of movement. We took in a lot of transfers.

How true. I was telling my wife this recently. Teams used to have a local feel with some out of state players mixed in. Not so anymore. But I guess that’s the price of success. We like to win so we shouldn’t complain. Just not into it quite as much. But I’ll adjust especially if we keep winning.

LSU is still getting the best players in the state if you go by prospect rankings.

Brown and Anderson appear to be stars. The 2023 group haven't made as big of an impact. I think that's what gives the impression of a lack of LA contribution.

Baseball is much different from football. You can lock down Louisiana for football and be very successful. Almost necessary. You don’t have to necessarily do that in baseball.

Re: 1989, I'm not sure Bianco was from Louisiana, but I believe Mook, Bush, Hymel, and Garrity were.

You can’t do that in baseball and be a consistent championship caliber team. Louisiana just doesn’t produce the talent in baseball that it does in football.

There are excellent players here but not enough of them to fill an Omaha roster. You’ve just gotta get the best and then fill in the blanks with talent from elsewhere.

They built teams on LA guys for decades. But times are changing with the transfer portal & with the draft. And Jay has west coast connections, so his umbrella has spread far west of the MS. If the weather is warm, he is hunting. CA, Vegas, AZ, NM. Texas, obviously.

I didn’t say you couldn’t do it. Just that it’s not as much of a need/luxury that you have in football.

Yes big time. And in the 90s college baseball wasn’t as big as it is now so lsu could just get the guys here to stay.
