Sure,Irvin's free throw he missed and the never shot second one had he made the first would have really made it tough on Indiana, but Fess didn't lose the game. This wasn't John Williams' inbound pass vs Georgia in Baton Rouge in 1985.

Agreed. We had IU panting and worn out when Dale pulled back the rains otherwise we're off to a second straight final 4.

Biggest problem was the injury to Rudy. He couldn't touch anything with his left(shooting)hand without grimacing in pain. No one else was hitting and the go-to 1st team AA was hurt. That was pretty much the game.

Daddy Dale actually admitted he should have started Willie Sims and let Macklin come off the bench every so often - that would have been a smart move, I think.

and CEDRIC Maceon (sp?)

I remember Cedric in the State Sweet 16 where he had enough time to dunk it, he instead threw up shot at the top of the key and missed it to lose the game.

Good assessment Thorny.

he Final Four in the Super Dome would have been wild, and LSU would have been hard to beat in that situation. As it was, I didn't even watch it.

I had 4 tickets for the F4. Gave them to a friend who took his young son. I couldn't watch on tv. Got mad again when the highlites show Keith Smart(La.) make t5he winning shot for Dickhead.

That is still the only LSU athletic event I walked out of truly mad, and I pretty much still am.

Not for me. I can think of a game against KY in Baton Rouge. It was in the early 90's. We were up big. If I remember right,we were up by 30 plus. The Wildcats started to press and our team was so ill prepared, we could not even get the ball in bounds most of the time.

This was one of the biggest comebacks ever. By my math, if we would have run the shot clock out with each possession and never took another shot, we would have still won by double figures.

That is the maddest I have been.

Great reference article Tigerinthe NO.

My biggest gripe was always what was pointed out in the SI article you linked.

Nikita Wilson was unstoppable until LSU stopped getting him the ball.

Sure there were other reasons given: Fess's free throws, the uncalled second technical Knight should definitely have gotten the uncalled hacking fouls down the stretch on the Hoosiers.

But ultimately up 9 with just over 4 minutes to play Dale chose to stall when Indiana had no answer to what we were doing offensively, namely get the ball in the post to Nikita, we chose to take him out of the equation.

We went into a stall our sweat dried and we blew what would have been a monumental upset.

I rmember that game also, the one thing that amazed me about Cedric was his leaping ability, man I swear he could jump into the basket if he so desired.

There was a better point guard in the area at Istrouma High School.

His name is Carlos Sample (as of a couple years ago, he was the head basketball coach there).

Maybe he didn't have the grades (it was Istrouma, after all--my alma mater ), but I always thought he should have had a shot at the big time.

He went on to start at Southern for 2 or 3 years and was a leading scorer, often tallying 25+ points.

Indiana also had little to no bench, if I remember. They were tired. Dale should have continued to cut the throat. Instead, he gave them a chance to recoop. IU had also lost Ricky Calloway for a brief time in the game, due to his knee problems. It was there for the taking...Dale just couldn't get past the fact that he had done it the year before and this team was about to do it again.

I would love to rematch Indiana, because they've ousted us from the NCAA Tournament 3 different times in 20 years. The committee tried several times, again in '89, to get Dale and Bobby on the court. In '92, they got their wish once again. It wouldn't be the same, though. I have nothing against IU, but everything vs. Knight. Beating Tom Crean wouldn't even be satisfying as it would be to beat the shite out of Knight. I wish we would have scheduled Texas Tech in '06...that would've done SOME justice.

I was also in the Basketball Band at that game. Let me guess, I sat behind you again at the 2000 Peach Bowl.

Good Times indeed.

Bottom line, Fess didn't lose the game.
Also, Fess Irvin would have been a very good PG at LSU had he stayed. He was pretty decent for a true Freshman.

I lay it on Brown. LSU had that game in the bag and Daddy Dale decided to take the air out of the ball.

The sad part of the 80-81 team is that was the best team in the country. Unfortunately, the loss of Rudy and the fact they picked a bad day to play terrible was their demise.

3. Horrible calls late in the game by the officials, one in particular. With less than a minute left in the game, one of the Indiana players reached both arms around Fess, touched the ball, and the official called the most improbable jump ball of all time. Indiana got the alternating possession and turned it into points. I am totally convinced Fess was fouled and it wasn't called.

great post. I remember this non-call also. I was livid. I can't ever remember at any level seeing a jump ball called when the defender almost literally hugs a guy from behind.

Does anyone have any pics or vids of this? I would love to see if images confirm my admittedly biased P&G memory .

So how did Fess Irvin lose the game to Indiana? free throws?
Fess Irvin didn't lose that game.Very unfair and inaccurate to pin that on him. We had possession and a 75-66 lead with under 5:00 left.

I love Dale and think he gets way too much criticism and not enough credit, but he let the air out of the ball down the stretch. We had played a truly magnificent game up to that point. Remember,Indiana was the #1 seed and the game was in Cincinnati in front of about 90% IU fans.

Sure,Irvin's free throw he missed and the never shot second one had he made the first would have really made it tough on Indiana, but Fess didn't lose the game. This wasn't John Williams' inbound pass vs Georgia in Baton Rouge in 1985.

You are SOOOOOOOOOOO right on. GOD THAT LOSS HURT.

Here's a quote from the article on the game:

"...into his ramblings about the Freak and overcoaching, may have outsmarted himself by going to a delay offense too soon. Over the last 4:18 the Tigers, who had been outplaying Indiana by aggressively running and attacking the basket, did not take a single shot until Nikita's nyet-cord effort after the buzzer."

BTW, that loss was a classic example of a Dale Brown coached team.

Never in history has there been a coach who could both do more-with-less and turn around and do less-with-more than Coach Brown.

Today he snatches defeat from the jaws of victory.

Tomorrow he snatches victory from the jaws of defeat.

He is a wonderful man, but his fatal flaw is not just doing what he can with his talents. It's either bomb or boom.
