Let them mainline steroids again, and I bet there would be another like Nolan Ryan within 10 years.
You honestly think this guy did steroids? You’re a bigger idiot than Lester if you do. Meet him and let him shake your hand NOW at his age and find out. Look at his lower half. He was throwing that before all the “steroids” were around.
What a freaking idiot some of you are.

Your fascination with Ryan is really something

Nolan Ryan wasn’t known for control

I grew up a Yankee fan. Ryan was not even on my radar from a fan perspective despite living in Houston and him being about my age. Frankly, he was a Met and I hated him. As I grew order and started softening to the Astros, meeting him and his family and watching documentaries on him, talking to players that faced him and played with him, made me realize how great this guy truly was and what he COULD have been with proper coaching.
Like Au said, Skenes is far better than Ryan was at his age. FAR better. Will he have the longevity and be the freak of nature he was, I don’t know. Maybe.

Idk why you’re getting DV’d.
Skenes is better.
Nolan was a flamethrower with typical control issues of a flamethrower.
Skenes is the oddity throwing 100+ like darts where he wants them. If his goal in life was to throw 104 he probably could.

He was CLEARLY the best in ‘72.
Was 8th in the mlb among pitchers WAR
5th in the AL alone

He might have a more developed all around game at this point (slider, changeup, etc.) than Ryan did at this age.
But there's no way to project whether he will ever come close to Ryan's most mind-boggling aspect, his longevity. Skenes will have to still be tossing 100+ heat twenty years from now to get into the Ryan-osphere, imo. Even then it will be tough to compare since Ryan did it without modern medicine, training, technology, etc.

Also, obligatory:
Didn't he watch Bull Durham? You never punch a guy with your pitching hand!

Ryan holds 51 total MLB records, including:
Base on balls allowed - 2,795
The next closest is Steve Carlton with 1,833. Ryan's curveball was as nasty as his 4 seam fastball. BOTH are better than Skenes. That being said, Skenes may well turn out to be a more effective pitcher because of his control. although, I don't foresee any pitcher comong close to any of the records Ryan took 27 seasons to acheive.

Control? You might want to go lookup Nolan Ryan’s stats. Ryan walked more than anyone in history. The dude threw fire but he wasn’t known for control.
His lack of control almost cost him his career the first few years.

No. No one is close to N. Ryan in velocity. They measured velocity at the plate back then (when ball crosses the plate). Now, they measure velocity at the release point of the pitcher. Mathematically, N. Ryan threw 108 if measured today.

Ryan was almost pushed out of the league at skenes age because of his wildness. He was able to become effectively wild and use it to his advantage, but that is not skenes.
Stephen Strasburg is a better comparison.

If you read what the topic is clearly saying, its saying that Skenes is the closest thing
…..which means not Nolan Ryan
