There are people all over the country who are huge fans of sports teams of all kinds, NFL, NBA, NHL, MLS, and yes, college sports. Anybody anywhere can be a fan of any team they choose, even with zero connection to a city or state. How many Yankee fans are there who have never been to Yankee Stadium or New York? How about Lakers or Dodger fans with no connection to LA or ever been to LA? This notion you have to have lived somewhere or have some kind of connection to a team to be a fan is so incredibly stupid. I guarantee you, any coach or school are willing to accept unlimited number of fans from anywhere in the country or world. If you believe otherwise, I have some Arizona beach property for you. Tell a kid in California he can not be a LSU fan because he has no connection to Louisiana. Yep, that would really go well.

Sidewalk fans are great. Frontrunning sidewalk fans are trash, and there are a lot of them. Their ilk used to be Miami, or Michigan, or FSU fans. Now they're Bama fans.

I can assure you with 100% certainty of two things:

1. I would not be half as passionate about LSU football if I hadn't gone to school there.
2. I am more passionate about LSU football than 100% of the people who did not go to school at LSU or who has no real connection to LA.

I love LSU as an institution and I want it to do well in all areas. Many, possibly most, sidewalk fans have no regard for anything but the sports teams.

I represent the most common type of LSU sidewalk fan.

Never attended a class at LSU. Simply grew up, first listening to LSU football and basketball on the radio as a child. Would search the local newspaper looking for any mention of LSU athletics. Attend at least one game each season. Never miss a game that is televised.

Bitch when the team loses, dance when the team wins.

Keep track of the Tigers via social media. Keep up with LSU recruiting. Own a half dozen different articles of clothing or caps with the LSU logo.

Pull for the NFL teams that have former Tigers. Pull for the MLB teams that have former Tigers.

Love LSU and everything it stands for. The attraction came from being a native of Louisiana and LSU being our flagship university. It also came from the fact that the LSU athletic teams are often made up of large numbers of Louisiana kids.

I love the 4 notes, Mike the Tiger, TGG's, TGBTL, Death Valley on Saturday night.

How bout all those Tulane sidewalk fans!?

(Attendance from Wikipedia, for reference. Keep in mind New Orleans is approximately twice the size of Baton Rouge.)

Geauxbrown, you described me to a t also. I have BLED p& g for 40 yrs, and will bleed it for 40 more lord willing. The people I have a problem with are the ones that change teams, don't follow their team during the cloudy periods, only when the sun is shining, and maybe worst of all, the different school for each sport fan. I am LSU 100% in the 2 sports I watch.

Yeah...nah.

I grew up an LSU fan with a father who was an alumnus. My life took me to another university, but I never stopped being an LSU fan. Passion for the program does not derive from attending classes there.

Having said that, I've always felt that alumni ought to have special privileges above and beyond mere boosters who are not alumni. Maybe a 2-1 ratio when handing out TAF point or whatever...
