Sage Ryan, Derrick Davis, Matthew Langlois all have the talent to compete for playing time right away

quote:

"Got to see who's going to start at safety. Jay Ward coming back at safety," Orgeron said on Off the Bench recently. "Who's it going to be at the other? Is it going to be Jordan Toles? Sage Ryan? Derrick Davis? Matthew Langlois looks great."

Ryan, Davis and Langlois are true freshmen, all of whom have massive potential in this secondary's future. Only Davis was on campus for the spring session and is more of a big bodied safety who has the physical traits to make plays all over the field. Davis is certainly one of the more promising prospects in this class and will be interesting to see if he can win over Jones over the first couple of weeks of fall camp.

An elite level athlete, Ryan figures to be among the freshmen who get a long look this fall not just at safety but on special teams as well. He's been a prospect LSU has been clammering to get on campus for years after winning state titles at Lafayette Christian and being one of the more highly touted recruits in the 2021 class.

Langlois plays with reckless abandon. His mindset is to attack down hill, every play. He really improved as a senior by growing into his body more but like Ryan, will need to impress the coaching staff right away in fall camp and through the workouts over the last month.

The Tigers will of course give guys like Todd Harris and Jordan Toles, who have been with the program, a fair shake as well. But the number of bodies is what's most impressive about this group. It could potentially allow LSU to make substitutions in different packages while keeping everyone fresh throughout the game and confusing the offense.

Not gonna lie- I talked a lot of shite about Langlois when he committed because I thought we were giving up on Sage when he committed.

I talked ahit because of his internet ranking and skin color but that kid is a fricking dog

I think Davis is the most polished and has the best chance to play day 1,

I think Sage has by far the highest ceiling,

I think Matthew could be a 2 time all sec guy though.

I love this safety class.

Yet again- O had a weakness and he fixed it immediately.

With every one of his classes I believe more and more in Ed.

Perhaps LSU hopes Ryan knows a good chowder recipe? If not, the word SI was looking for is probably clambering, which would still be a poor and inaccurate description of the way LSU recruited Ryan.

ETA: see Ash Williams' post below for the correct word the SI writer was looking for.

Not to mention how the back-end of the program has improved ala diet, analytics, technology, new facilities, the NIL roll-out. O has built a top notch program we just need the X's and O's fixed at this point.

I'm sure he can come in and have a D.J. Welter type of dominance.

Sage ryan. End of discussion.

Langlois is great going forward. Will knock someone's head off.

Will be interesting to see where they play him. To me he is more of a strong/box safety.

Jordan Toles

Someone I still wanna see more of. Daronte Jones specializes in defensive backs, I’d like to see how Toles does under him.

I love the versatility the defense is evolving into. Offenses nowadays try to exploit matchups and if we have no liabilities in the passing game or running game, it helps us to match up well with anyone.

Mathew Langlois looks like one of the twelve year olds that drive their parents golf carts unsupervised around Beau Chene

Ditto. Laughed at a white 3 star safety. I have a feeling I'm going to look pretty stupid.

According to Blake Ruffino, he is hearing Major Burns may pass up both Harris and Toles.

He should. Neither of them have performed up to par.

Nah, “clamoring” was the word they meant.

I didn’t laugh. I watched his highlights and came away with the impression that if I had to pick two safeties from this class they would be Langlois and Davis. Sage Ryan is the best athlete, but he looks more like a nickel guy to me. All three look very impressive.
