Shouldn’t SEC champ have auto bid regardless of record?

I guess I don’t get why the power conferences don’t have playoff bids.

It’s the age old argument. Best teams or most deserving .

In the expanded playoffs they will. Under this current format, no not with 3 losses.

I’ve always been a proponent of conference champions of power five get automatic bid regardless of the record. However many they want to add on top of that through rankings, beauty contests, or whatever… I guess fine by me, but conf champs = in.

The exact reason they are expanding playoffs.
This would be the absolute best season for an 8-12 team playoff. It’s a damn shame we’re missing some of these matchups in one big bracket

There won’t be Conference Championship games when the playoffs expand.
“Conference Champion” will be determined by record and a series of tiebreakers, but won’t be super important to programs anymore.
There will be no need for the extra game (and risk to injury) when 90% of the time the two teams in the game will likely be in the 12 teams already, and the rest of the time it will be an undeserving team playing a team who is a lock for the playoffs so might rest starters or not try as hard, etc. Its just going to be unnecessary

No, take best teams. Big problem looming if they picking conference champions in place of highly ranked teams. With a 12 team playoff how would job like a top ten LSU team excluded from playoffs due to mediocre conference champions.

Worst case you may lose #11 & #12.

In the current format, automatic bids would be a bad idea in my opinion. Imagine a 3 loss LSU making it over a 1 loss Georgia or imagine a 4 loss Purdue making it in over a 1 loss Michigan. While most on this board would be fine with that, now imagine the tables turned and a 3 loss SEC East team making it over a 1 loss LSU. Yalls faces would melt and you know it.

The challenge to your comment is that college football will have a hard time walking away from the money of the Conference Championships.

Doubt this happens. Money is too great to give up.

How many losses do we have?
How many losses would UGA have?

I's prefer to see playoffs involve conference champions. I don't care if it's a 3 or 4 loss team if they win their conference.
Putting supposed "better" teams in is a falacy. If they were THAT good they'd have won their conference.

In the new playoff they essentially do. Top 6 conf champions get auto bid. Hard to see SEC not in Top 6 conferences.
This is why you dont want to get rid of divisions. If we dont have divisions then this year then we are not in the SECCG. And if we were in the 12 team playoff we could still make it as conf champion tonight. Take divisions away that is all gone.

Green Bay won the Super Bowl with 6 losses.
