....I'll be watching Mr.Shelvin with great interest this season. So plug up that middle Mountain Man and siphon off those O/L blockers. Some pancakes now and then would be nice. Let Divinity et al play cleanup.

Good to hear he's down in weight, but the bottom line is he has to produce when he's on the field. He has to cause havoc in the middle to help our young players on defense. He was a beast in high school, so it's now his time to show he's ready to contribute like we all hoped for from the beginning! The success of our DL is crucial this year!

Terrance Cody was 360-370, and was two inches taller. His weight made him a situational player.

The overwhelming majority of Nose tackles are situational players.

340 lbs isn't a great weight for anyone.

He'll have to maintain that weight throughout the season, which will be more difficult than doing it during the offseason.

It's more difficult to maintain a higher weight during the season because you're burning off so much during practices and games. Most players are lighter by the end of the season, not heavier. It takes a lot more commitment in the off-season to cut weight when most of their workouts are "voluntary"

Sure, for the naturally learner players who are working to add weight in the off-season. Less weight training leads to less mass for them.

Most big men put weight back on during the season. Weekdays are used mostly for recuperation for football players. That’s not conducive to keeping the weight off for big men, especially those with weight issues.

I would agree, maybe someone 6' 5" or more could carry that weight, but its too heavy for Shelvin.

But is it better than 370? A lot. Shelvin played well at times in the latter part of last year and while 340 is not a great weight, its good for him considering his long standing weight problems.

We lose Alexander but I think overall we will have a stronger and deeper d-line. Shelvin and Ika will likely split reps and allow Fehoko to move outside, but Fehoko can still move inside in a pinch.

When healthy, Lawrence can really be a disruptive player. Logan, Farrell and Thomas all have good experience. We cant afford many injuries there, but we have seven solid players to rotate in for the three d-line spots. I think it will be a stronger d-line than last year.

Lawrence staying healthy is the key. He is the real playmaker of the group.

The overwhelming majority don’t have weight problems that limit them to 5-10 snaps per game.

He could be the same weight & have improved his cardiovascular endurance. His injuries prevented him from being where he wanted to be more than anything.

He was reportedly down to 325 before the 2017 season, before getting back up to 360-365 in the spring of 2018.

The ability to keep his weight under control is the primary thing hindering him right now. That doesn’t change because he’s lost weight again. He has to figure out how to keep it off.

His weight likely contributed to his injuries.

I think a fair summary of the situation would be that Shelvin has underperformed his potential because he lacked the discipline to control his weight.

Lots of people struggle with their weight, its a hard problem to have. He deserves credit for losing weight and should be a better player for it. But his weight is still not ideal and at 300 to 310 pounds he could play more snaps and perhaps be an all SEC performer.

He is a situational player not because he is a nose tackle, its because he is overweight. While its true you see a lot of rotation on the defensive line for most all teams, some nose tackles play a lot more than others and would not be considered situational.

It's certainly possible.

Look, there have been many many football players before him play at 340. I dont know why people are pretending like that is taboo. 370, yeah, there is a gripe there.

If he is conditioned at that weight, he can give the 20 plays or so needed from a nose tackle.

which ones are not situational ?

the first one i think of in the nfl right now is damon harrison. Looking at his snap counts, he is clearly situational, for example.

Ika is as heavy or heavier than Shelving right now. He has lost a lot of weight too.Lawrence looks more fit. Alexander had knee problems and was a little over weight. The offensive and defensive lineman of the team last year needed to add muscle. They had their butts handed to them by a lot of teams. Much of the offensive line problems was technique but they looked less fit then some of the teams they faced. Both Ika and Tyler could stand to add tone and lose unneeded extra weight. This camp should trim them down another 10 pounds.

Perfect!!! He will finish August between 320–330. The trick is for him to not gain weight when Oct/Nov get here.

it’s crazy to think about your body weight fluctuating 10-15% on the reg. think about that for a 175 lb “normal” dude. at christmas ballooning to the 190’s. summer time, slimmed down to sub 160. for me that’d be at LEAST 2-3 inches in my pant size. maybe 4. pack away the size 32 in the winter and break out the 36s! you gotta have completely different wardrobes among other things (like your food budget).

They want him no lower than 330 if he goes lower than that he’ll start losing muscle just the way the kids built
