… aside from the atrocious meandering strike zone from the umpire last night. Each game he seems to get a little better. Man, if we could get him with good command coming into the SEC tournament and the NCAA tournament he could be a difference maker. You gotta have a big heart for that kid. Coming off injury like that is always rough.

honestly think he's more comfortable in the long-relief role

Just 2 walks in 7.2 IP since he moved to the bullpen. He had 22 in 41.1 IP as a starter. His WHIP as a reliever is 1.04. His WHIP as a starter was 1.69 (and that includes his starts against Purdue fort Wayne and Omaha where he was untouchable)

Long relief is a huge part of doing well in tournaments

stuff plays up when you can just let it eat. Don't have to worry about saving anything for 6 innings, or more than like 12 batters.

ETA: Also, less thinking

Movement on his fastball this weekend seemed to increase as well. It's not as easy to barrel up when he's got run on it at 98-100 mph.

Same with his slider. also controlled it better. Umpire whiffed on a few of them on the outside edge against righties

2 seam had good run and drop on it at ~98 mph. His command is better and that pitch will get damn near every hitter out.

His % of strikes thrown the last three outings (1 aTm, 2 Arkie) has been his best Pitches-Strikes were 35-24 (68.6%), 17-12 (70%), and 60-40 (66.7%). That's 112-76 or 67.9% strikes over the last 3 games.

He made some adjustments. He is going only from the stretch and supposedly closed off his stance, and its helped him get actual run on his 4 seamer. That is a gamechanger. It was so flat before

It’s almost like the coaches saw the potential in the kid and decided to keep coaching him and not give up on the “Shores experiment”

Also hitting triple digits seems like a decent bit out of the pen.

I really like him as a 1 time through the order guy out the pen.

I feel like A&M and Arkansas were both aggressive teams at the plate. This plays into Chase’s strengths.

Somewhat depends on the situation he’s pitching in….like all pitchers. Calling pitches is a lot easier with a late lead, but I agree it looks like he’s turned a corner.

Almost like players and allowed to improve, and do improve if shown coaches keep having faith running you out there. Also it helps when you're just super talented like Chase is

It would be really nice if someone could just be a 3 inning starter on Sunday’s. I would love to have Evans and Shores as long relievers. Maybe Evan’s will settle into the role.

Still needs to develop a strikeout pitch. Guy is good getting hitters to foul off, but struggles to punch em out.

Or it could be that he is getting better and his relief roles are later when he was better, while his starter roles were earlier when he was worse. I don’t know, but that seems much more likely to me. Now if we started him, and he sucked, I’d be inclined to agree with you.

What I noticed Sunday was it seemed like his misses were really close. Previously, he would throw a few good pitches, then one to the backstop or in the opposite batters box. I just thought he had really good control Sunday.

Ben McDonald has told a story about a pitcher teammate who, when named the starter for an upcoming game, would get himself sick with worry and anticipation and perform poorly. The manager moved him to the pen and, when he would get called on to pitch relief on short or no notice, he did fine.

Not saying that's the case here, but the mind is a funny thing.

I am not advocating that he be our third starter. I just like the way they’ve brought him along and helped him build his confidence. I think his coming out the pen can be huge for us. If one of our starters has an off game it’s nice to know that we could have someone like Shores who can come out of the pen and play a key role and helping us to win some games.
