I went to LSU to march for him. I was not disappointed in the experience. He was the consummate professional.
And I guarantee that no blue chip high school marching band recruit (See it like football recruiting) is going to LSU to strictly play for the current "Scraping the bottom of the Barrel" Directors. Thanks Todd and Damon.....

Frank and Linda were head and shoulders above what LSU has now.
WHY has this been allowed to happen?

LSU has a National Championship in football and TGBFTL would most likely not finish in top the half of the SEC if there were a sanctioned SEC Marching Band competition judged by DCI judges.

Sorry, but their halftime performances just put me to sleep!(And too much Piped In garbage to make a statement about 'During the Game")

Mr. Wickes was an impressive person from a leadership standpoint. At the time of my audition in 1997 he was the most impressive leader I had ever met. He left a profound mark on many student's lives.

On the story of TB today versus back then. I think it is a respect thing. I think people in general (not just band members) respected what Frank and Linda were doing more than they did Roy and the current regime. I just feel like people thought they were more qualified. That may or may not be correct.

RIP Mr. Wickes

You sound overly negative on this part. I don't care about halftime shows much, but as someone who goes to the games, I can tell you these last couple of years performances have at least managed to keep people entertained. They used to be real snoozers. They might not all be great, but they are much better than they were (even if everything else is not as good as it once was).

I auditioned for FBW in his office Spring of 1990. I had been on a HS Band trip the week before, had Spring Testing at LSU that day and had not looked at the audition material even the slightest bit. The LSU audition material was the All State Audition (which I had not done), you played some scales, etc. I was unprepared and AWFUL.

Fortunately FBW had done a clinic at my HS in the Fall and he sought me out and asked me to join TB if I chose to attend LSU. He sat behind his desk an did not say a word. When I finished, he sat there looking and me and said, "Do you want to explain what just happened here?" I said sir, I am so sorry, we have been preparing for this National Wind Ensemble Competition last week, I have Spring Testing, etc and frankly I didnt look at this audition material because I am exhausted."

He goes, "Well this was disappointing, I hope you are better than this in the Fall, Good bye"

I got my acceptance letter to TGBFTL a week later.

Here is some cool info on Frank Wickes as a College Basketball Player:
quote:

Since we are reflecting on the recent passing of an all time LSU Ambassador, Mr. Frank Wickes, the former Director of Bands at LSU (1980-2010)

Here a few things you might guys might not know about Frank Wickes, the College Basketball player.

He scored 1089 pts and pulled down 755 rebounds as a forward from 1956-1959 at the University of Delaware
#28 on their all time scoring list
#9 on their all time rebounds list

He averaged 17.3 points per game over his career.

He once made 18 field goals in a single game and averaged 22.8 points per game in 1957-58 (#2 on their all time ppg/season list).

He lead the team in scoring his Sophomore and Junior year. He has two of their top ten high scorer games all time and one of their top twenty rebounding games.

42pts..........................Frank Wickes vs. Swarthmore, 2/20/1958

41pts...............................Frank Wickes vs. Bucknell, 2/20/1959

21 rebounds ..................................Frank Wickes vs. Lehigh, 12/6/1958

Coupled with his amazing music career, we can all agree that Frank Wickes was truly a renaissance man and a man for all seasons. RIP and Forever LSU

Loved playing Malagueña, I don’t care if the rest of the board hated the Latin flair...it was awesome to go on the road to Auburn in ‘96 (I think) and blow the doors off playing it at halftime. Yep, trumpet player here and back then we had some studs who could wail in the upper octaves! ‘93-97

I played trombone under Frank back in the late 90s. I always liked him. He pushed the band for excellence, but he also had a lot of fun. Sad to hear he has passed.

THIS!

That damned piped in music! Let the other guys with inferior bands and lesser culture do that shite. At LSU we have a music department and a damned fine band that doesn't need pre-recorded, piped-in crap to make Death Valley hell on earth for any visiting team. Hell, NO BAND in the SEC should ever have to work around that piped-in junk during a game.

Is there anything to be found for funeral/memorial arrangements? I think there are probably several of us former members who would like to at least send an arrangement. This man meant so much to so damned many of us when we were under his guidance.

Go back to your Tiger Band social media student committee and tell your "leader" this boat does not float anymore. The band is and has been a horrible mess since Damon Talley arrived. He said "the tiger band kids were "underworked and overpaid." Does THAT sound like a supporter of the Tiger Band?

Frank Wickes recruited me to LSU where I was in the TGBFTL from1984-1988. I worked my way up and was a section leader for three wonderful years. I learned more life lessons and how to strive for excellence in whatever I did from him than from any other experience I’ve ever had in my life. Frank Wickes had a profound positive impact on my life. Words cannot express how appreciative I am of him giving me that opportunity to be a member of Tiger Band.

Rest In Peace Mr. Wickes.
