Year 4 at LSU year 3 at Bama.

Won the sec in year 2 at LSU and year 3 at Bama.

Its a totally different era in how a team was built.

And the SEC wasn’t near as competitive as it was this year. Go back and look at how many SEC teams had winning records that year and how many have winning records this year. It is a much more competitive conference in 2024.

Really? They only award a national championship every other year? No. The same number of teams win national championships in a given year - ONE. And the same number of teams (roughly) are competing for it. It’s not harder now, or easier; it’s the same.

Everyone forgets Damien James getting kicked off the team mid season. Was a huge loss, he was the qb of the secondary. We weren't able to replace him adequately the rest of the season.

Seems to be harder to stockpile talent with kids wanting NIL and starting spots. Parity is seeping into fbs, so iNCs may be more of a crap shoot.

If you are correct, than the next twenty years will see more teams winning national championships than the last 20. But even if this happens, it is still not harder. It might be harder for an Alabama to win six, but it will be easier for Tulane to win one. All in all, it will be just as easy to win a national championship.

Wait. Are you claiming that an 8-5 record causes national championships?

Not really a fair comparison. Saban took over a program coming off 4-7 and 3-8 seasons and had no transfer portal at his disposal. Everything had to be built 100% through high school recruiting, so it took 3-4 years minimum to really turn around a program.

LSU’s national brand image pre-Saban also wasn’t nearly what it is today. We had 3 SEC titles in the prior 40 years and were mostly a middle of the pack team in conference. Expectations were much lower when Saban arrived

Because Mauck got hurt late vs Florida. We're likely in Atlanta 3 years in a row if he doesn't.

Or maybe LSU beat up 4 shite teams and went 1-1 vs ok competition, losing to a 10-4 VT, and beat 8-5 UF.
The meat of the schedule was still ahead when Mauk was hurt and the D gave up 30+pts in 4/7 final games causing some concern among the fanbase.

Saban also took over a worse situation..... in this day of N.I.L. and unlimited transfers there's no reason why a team can't turn around in a year or two.

Hell Kelly took over a program that has won National Championships while current players were still alive.

the D was in shambles due to injuries. remember the cotton bowl? we had domanick davis or michael clayton playing safety that game we were in such bad shape. hell it may have been both. I was at that game but that was 22 years ago.

D was giving up so many points because it was on the field too much. The offense struggled mightily to move the ball after Mauck got hurt.

Not sure what you're saying here. I think most of us believe had we not lost Mauck during the UF game, we would've certainly beat Arky, likely Auburn, and very possibly Bama. Moreover, that would put us in Atlanta vs UGA. OTOH, I don't think having Dellinger changes the outcome of either Aggy or Bama. Maybe UF. But recall, we ran the ball pretty good vs UF without Dellinger and UF picked up on one of Nuss's tendencies which they exploited.

UF was only able to exploit those tendencies due to the absence of Dellinger and, then, Frazier. While the defensive collapse in the second half against A&M was a major contributor to the loss, so were the 3 INTs by Nuss. Had Dellinger not gone down, there’s a good chance Nuss has more time to make better decisions and LSU is able to hold off A&M. Regardless, even if LSU only wins the Florida game, they are playing this week in the SECCG.

Yes, easier for some, harder for historical top recruiting programs, like LSU (the basis of this forum), along with the other members of top 5 NCs this century.

I recall they lost Hoofkin a few games and dismissing James for last 4 games hurt. Don't recall who else, but yeah Saban didn't have the year 3 depth tRant vilifies Kelly over.
Still stands LSU wasn't really in contention for SEC champs that year even with Mauck healthy imo.
