NIL plus the portal spell trouble for Tuscaloosa. Saban knows that. It’s why he went off about Tamu in that meeting with donors a few years ago.

He used to get what he wanted because he was saban and he had supporters willing to pay under the table. He knew that the secret to winning in college is to get more bigger and faster linemen. He simply wore the opposition down. He got them with dark money. Success followed. He could get kids noticed and put them in the nfl.
That just doesn’t matter anymore. Players can get paid and get noticed.

Bama does not have the money to bring in the quality AND depth of players compared to the likes of Texas, Tennessee, fla state, Miami, USC, Michigan, and a dozen others.

They can get some big name playmakers but there’s erosion in the supporting cast.
He can’t get the depth that he used to have.

This is going to be the struggle of many small market teams.

He's 72, set for life, and tired of all the BS you have to deal with now.

Nick Saban is 72 and has been at Alabama for 17 yrs. He's run his race. He's tired and ready to call it quits.

Or maybe he is just old, tired and has nothing else to prove?

He was the king of recruiting advantage and he knew it is over. In a league with parity he is just a regular coach.

let me tell you that is not true. What in the world makes you think Tennessee has deeper pockets than bama?

I think it’s a simple as an older coach not wanting to deal with the current landscape of NIL+transfer portal. Something that has created perpetual “free agency”. It’s the same reason why guys like Coach K and Roy Williams retired probably a few years earlier than they wanted to.

Think about being a 72 year old multi-millionaire. One of, if not the most accomplished coach in the history of your sport, constantly getting leverage by dumb 19 year old kids and their “hanger on” families. That’s the reality today.

You spend multiple years recruiting a kid out of HS. You get him the NIL deal he’s demanding to play for you. He’s a backup in year one, but you’re counting on developing him while he serves as depth. Then he comes to you and says he wants more money or he’s leaving. If you cave to the demand, now his teammates will do the same thing. Then you have to give the starter a “raise” because he can’t make less than the backup. And it goes on, and on, and on.

Saban probably didn’t 100% want to retire. He just didn’t want to play the NIL game anymore. Frankly, I don’t blame him. He has nothing to prove/gain by doing so.

He saw Jalen Milroe and said “frick this. I’ll never make this motherfricker into a quarterback”

This is what I heard.

Something like 30 players met with him after the Rose Bowl asking for more money, more touches so they can build their brand, etc. None of the players asked what the team needs to do to get back on top next season.

Saban knew it was time to go.

That would be a real kick in the arse or eye opener, if that was true. And it likely is true. Hell Saban was still grieving the loss and they were not talking team and unity, they were saying I need more money and fame.
