Roughing the Passer in the NFL is Totally Subjective and is an Unattainable Standard

I know this is beating a dead horse but the roughing the passer calls are just getting more and more outrageous. What the NFL expects the defender to do in many cases defies the laws of physics. Common sacks are now being called roughing with no real explanation as to the reason other than a vague “hard hit” bs. Obviously the commentators has been also given instructions by NFL to lay off.
The crazy thing is that it really isn’t preventing hits but simply giving yards bc the defense still has to rush heavy bc of the tight rules in pass coverage.

It's absolutely ridiculous.
They don't want the quarterbacks hit at all. The owners are paying guys 50 million 70 million 90 million and they want them on the field.
Unfortunately, that's incompatible with the game of football.

The worst one I've seen was on Chris Jones against the Raiders a few years ago.

Definitely incompatible with the size and speed of defensive linemen

They’ll continue to make rules subjective. It’s the easiest way to control the outcome

A clean tackle in QB can draw a flag now; ridiculous and inconsistent from game to game.

Saint DT had a sack yesterday where he beat the G, put his face mask in the QB’s chest, and fell along side of him when he took him down (non of the body weight bs) and still flag. I’m not sure what else he could’ve done.

Sorry that's not allowed in 2026 NFL

For the Raider sack, the ref could at least use the totally unrealistic body weight excuse. The one yesterday by all metrics was a totally clean hit in that it wasn’t too high, not too low, and didn’t fall on top of him.

This one was far crazier than the Raiders one
its stupid but the argument in the Raiders game one could have been full body weight
This one was just a regular sack

the technology is there, roughing, pass interference, defenseless player, should all be reviewable. The game is way too fast now and refs seem to just be throwing flags if something has the appearance of any of those fouls above.
They basically put the Cardinals in FG range yesterday to win the game on a terrible "defenseless player " call. Those calls can completely change the outcome of a game, why not take the time to make sure you got it right?
the NFL allowed the officials to tank the pass interference reviews last time they tried it, why I'm not really sure.

That’s my point. If the play yesterday is roughing then I don’t quite know how a DL can sack the QB w/o it being a penalty. Like I said above, the hit was NOT too high (head area) or too low (knee area) AND he didn’t fall on top of him. He literally just hit him hard but totally within the rules (well ar least what I thought the rules were). The announcer’s response was something that the ref has the ability to deem the hit “excessive” and then they just moved on.

it's no longer "roughing the passer". it's "sacking the qb"

All football is.
So is basketball.
So is baseball.
Which is why golf is the truest sport without referees determining outcomes.

Another rule that can be used to fix outcomes.

At this point it’s hard to argue this exact point.

I think that was the argument, and I believe the player was also fined for it. Of course, the fine is nothing more than the league using this as a basis to say "see the call was right..."

Never thought I would say it, but I would support a rule that dictates a QB is ruled down when touched by a defender with two hands. I can not stand the roller coaster of emotions when I see a QB get sacked, especially on a 3rd and long, only to have it reversed because a defender caused his shoelaces to become untied.
