I agree with you. But some are fixing to show up and tell you that the Crystal Ball is the “Coaches’ Trophy” like we don’t know that.
Everyone knows the Crystal Ball was the hardware that everyone wanted that year.

USC can have their AP trophy

Say that all you want. But Saban would have shut down USC just like he did the Sooners. They only got 152 total yards as being called the greatest offense ever.
I don’t care who says who was champ. LSU
Was the best team in the country in 2003.

The Coaches Poll and AP were the two organizations allowed to declare recognized national champions at that time.
LSU, USC, and their conferences, the SEC and Pac 10, agreed to be part of the BCS system. (The NCAA didn't mandate it).
If USC would have gotten an invite to play for the BCS championship (as determined by rules they agreed to), they would have accepted - just like they did in the years they were invited to play.

BCS was good but the media used it to screw us out of 2011. We should have faced Oklahoma State. Media wanted a Playoff so here we are

USC was screwed out of the game. They have every right to claim the AP title. Personally, I’d rather the crystal football. Oh well. That’s how the BCS was. I’ve been down a rabbit hole with YouTube highlights from years past.
Look at Ohio State coach John Cooper lobby for his team in 1998. They were AP #3 and beat aTm in the Sugar. His claim was that if FSU beat Tennessee, OSU should get consideration.
Flash ahead to 2001. Nebraska was AP #4 but BCS #2. AP #2 (Oregon) and #3 (Colorado) were assigned to the Fiesta while Nebraska was slaughtered by Miami in the Rose. A Miami loss means chaos.
With that said, I miss those days.

There is only one Crystal Football
No one went into the BCS with the goal of winning the AP Poll

The BCS formula in 2003 took several factors into consideration. Both the AP and Coaches polls were part of it also including strength of schedule and “significant wins”. Lumping everything together, LSU and OU met in the championship game.
But the blame goes to the AP! Going into the conference championship games, OU was #1, USC #2, LSU #3. I don’t think Pac12!had a conference championship game. We beat UGA and OU got blown out by Kansas St! I was in the GA Dome as we watched the scoreboard and our Tigers beat UGA. As we the left the GA Dome we chanted “LSU
USC, Oklahoma#3!”
We were concerned that we’d be left out of the BCS championship in favor of USC. When the entire BVS calculation was done, we were in and USC was out. But that was because of the AP, which dropped OU to #2 after their Big 12 championship game loss. We were #3 in the final AP poll; USC was still #1. Had the AP dropped OU to #3, we’d have played USC for the BCS championship.
The AP caused the 2003 controversy and stubbornly gave USC their 2003 national championship.
I like our crystal trophy. I’ve been hoping for this game since then. At this point it isn’t really relevant, but I want this game bad!
Sorry for the long post!

USC was a dynasty
Three-peat national champs!
2003* LSU
2004* Vacated
2005* Texas
How can anyone else possibly measure up?

I remember that Lou Holtz (SCarolina HC) voted in the UPI, for SoCal and NOT LSU.

What ever happened to the rumor that LSU was going to play USC some season shortly thereafter? Is this the game 21 year later?
Take this for what it’s worth. When I was at LSU Joe Alleva spoke to our class (John Lombardi was professor) - anyway Alleva said LSU was trying for a min to play USC, but they wouldn’t agree. They chickened out. This was circa - 2007/2008.

Wasn’t it SOS that did it?
Yes that was part of the "problem" for the media. I don't think they truly understood the formulas. The week leading up to the Conference Championship games they had basically anointed OU as best team ever and was in win or lose. USC was considered in b/c PAC 10 didn't have a championship game and back then no one ever jumped a team in the polls unless it was head to competition.
Their narrative that week had a list of results that had to happen for LSU to get in but they failed to list what had to happen for USC to get in. It was unfathomable to them that USC's fate was dependent upon an irrelevant game being played in Hawaii while everyone was sleeping.
