re: Really pains me to see the once vaunted Death Valley reduced to an abandoned shell haunted

The truth is winning fills stadiums expecially Tiger stadium. Losing empties Death Valley. That's just the way it is in Baton Rouge. The Saints could stink (as they do this season) and they are still 80% filled if not more.

Well thats what it was when Tiger Stadium gained its reputation and coaches made all the famous quotes about it.

Factors hurting attendance:
1. Every game is televised (less demand for being there in person)
2. Length of games due to TV timeouts
3. Only 1 or 2 'big' home games a year (Bama, Florida, Auburn, UGA sometimes because of all big out of conference games being played at neutral sites)
4. Availability and affordability of big screen HDTVs for home use
5. Price of TAF contribution for tickets and price of tickets themselves
6. Price of parking
7. Tailgating restrictions
8. Overpriced concessions and limited good choices
9. Piped-in music (although last night seemed to have more band music but that may have been because alumni band played also)
10. Incompetent design to post-game traffic flow
11. No TAF party in the PMAC (may only be temporary)
Factors that may help attendance:
1. Selling of alcohol throughout stadium
2. Video screens (although they are not great by peer SEC stadium standards)
3. Suites (but you can argue that corporate control of these tickets results in less reliable attendance)

Great list. Pre-COVID and pre-BLM, the biggest factor for attendance decline is TV options.
TS's atmosphere was built in a different paradigm where one had to be in the stadium to see the Tigers play. If not, there were a few photos in the Sunday Advocate, maybe a highlight or two on local TV, and some clips on a coach's show.
The schedule usually included the SEC teams, one or more big OOC games, and perhaps Tulane (used to be a rivalry).
For example, '71 included A&M, Colorado (#3), and ND.
In '79, Mac's last season, it included USC and FSU.
Point being, TS's reputation was forged in a very different era. There was a different business model in play then. Then, my guess is that Admin's goal was to get as many people in the stadium as possible. Now, it's how can we maximize profits.

Stadium gets rowdy only once or twice a season and empties out early every other game.
2019 shows this is a bullshite statement. Only game not full was the Auburn game, probably because of the weather. Every other home conference game was full to the end. And even though the Auburn game wasn’t full—everyone who came stayed.
This is such a lazy, uninformed take.

Not true. Realize they were blow outs but lots of fans left the Arky and A&M games early.
There are exceptions where our atmosphere is as good as ever but even in '19 that wasn't true for every game. Really only FL.

Blah blah blah. Pony up the money and go to the game. If not for the corporate money, we wouldn’t have the facilities and be able to afford millions for coaches.

This is probably the most overlooked factor. People talk about the quality of the “home viewing experience” all the time, and it’s true - it’s way better watching games in high definition. But I think the availability of home viewing is a much larger factor.
In 1995, LSU played 6 home games. 1 was on national TV, 1 was on JPS, and 4 were not televised. Stadium capacity 79,940.
In 2005, LSU played 6 home games. 4 were on national TV, 1 was on PPV, and 1 was not televised. Stadium capacity 91,600.
In 2015, LSU played 7 home games. All 7 were on national TV. Stadium capacity 102,321.
Not to mention the fact that our capacity from 1988-1999 would be the 17th largest college football stadium today. Our capacity from 2000-2014 would be the 10th largest college football stadium today.

LSU has priced out the common folk who live and breathe football.
This. They destroyed the culture of gameday in lieu to make easy money.
It’s why woody has to crush this hire. The common folk won’t support it at the current prices

I agree with this. But the loser has proven to be the environment inside the stadium. It's been sacrificed for the new, corporate support paradigm.

I was one of the season ticket holders who stayed home Saturday. ULM was a mediocre opponent, nothing about our recent performances gave me a reason to be excited, and since games run a minimum of 3 hours and 45 minutes because of too damn many long commercial breaks, I decided to use my time and eating out/concession money in other ways.
If that makes me a bad fan, so be it. Guilty as charged.

Joe Alleva's vision finally realized.

Too many rednecks hunting
stop. I used to hunt on Thursday morning, get home for lunch, and either leave my home in Memphis after lunch Thursday or early Friday morning for the Arkansas game every single year. Hunting has nothing to do with why the crowd will suck this weekend. It will suck because we suck and have a lame duck coach.

Same.... it just wasn't worth it to me. I have to drive in 4 hours each way and so my gameday also includes 2 nights in a hotel, plus the concessions, supplies for the tailgate etc. What really did was the 8:00 kick-off...game ended at damn near midnight.
Decided to spend the day fishing instead....bite was hot and fished till the sun went down...still gave me plenty of time to get home, start a fire and enjoy the game with a tall bourbon

Nah. Alleva and Alexander killed it slowly.

It's not just LSU
Go take a look at the crowd for the UCLA and USC game
It's a troubling trend for college football
That loyal fan base is aging and the young kids of today have far too many distractions to ever be in a position to replace that old fan base
Outside of a handful of games, I don't see the upper decks ever being full again
For LSU, they may need to look at reducing capacity

It will be back to normal with a good coaching hire.
