Original post actually just said to “rank these DBs based on their best year at LSU” meaning the ones I listed.

In his orginal post he did NOT include "Safety type"...check the time stamp.

That’s because he edited it again after you posted, but only added the part about the debate. The safety part was already there. No worries though

Are we just doing Safeties? TM7 only played safety against Arkansas in 2011 due to injuries. He was nickel every other game if I'm remembering correctly

corey Webster is one of the most slept on DBs in LSU history for no reason.

2x All American
back to back 7 INT seasons
National Champion
then he played 9 years in the NFL so it’s not like he’s one of those guys we forget because his pro career was meh

I like Steltz, but he got those picks against crap opponents in 2007.
3 of the 6 ints against Miss. St in 45-0 blowout.
1 vs. Verginia Tech 48-7 blowout
2 vs Ol' Miss 41-24

Props to Craig, but he's not as good as the others on the list.

I'm pretty sure he was mostly a corner back.

2/3 if Chad Jones’s picks in 2009 came against ULL and the 3rd Arkansas.
4/7 of Delpit picks in 2028 were against 8-5 or worse teams.
Jamal Adams lone pick in 2016 was in a blowout loss to Alabama.

do you think his 3 picks helped?

I assume these other guys just didn’t want to catch interceptions against the weaker part of the schedule.

probably 60/101 tackles were against Miss State too

get fricked guy.

Steltz had 182 tackles in 4 years at lsu. He was only a full time starter his Senior year.
Ryan Clark and LeRon Landry both had 315 tackles.
Clark started 3 years and made 110, 99, and 88 tackles those years. He's not on this list.
The bottom line is, safeties make a lot of tackles, and if Steltz wouldn't have had a 3 int game, the first game of the season, he would not have had that memorable of season.
And once again, I like Steltz and am happy about him being a Tiger.

Mathieu in 2011...and there is not really a close second.

No defensive player in LSU history has been more singularly impactful than he was that season. He forced 6 fumbles. Recovered 4. Had a pair of INTs, 11 PDs, and 7.5 TFLs. He scored 2 TDs on defense. And that doesn't even discuss his special teams impact. He almost single-handedly changed the trajectory of multiple big games where Les's terrible offensive approach was stuck in the mud going nowhere

v. Oregon, LSU's offense couldn't get out of its own way for the first quarter. Trailing 6-3, Mathieu strips the punt returner and picks up the fumble on a bounce to score LSU's first TD.

v. Arkansas LSU was terrible offensively. Digging themselves into a 14-0 hole. Mathieu returns a punt 92 yards for a TD to completely change the game.

v. Georgia LSU's offense was somehow even worse than against Arkansas. Another punt return TD completely flips the course of the game.

He was the SEC and National defensive POY, as well as a Heisman Trophy Finalist. For one season Mathieu was arguably the best defensive player, at any position, over the course of the last 20+ years.

this is a best season thread.

in their careers.

you’ve names 1 other safety with 100 tackles. Adams, Jones, Reid didn’t have 80 in a season.

I thjnj that season is up there for all defenders.

I think Perkins has a chance to be as impactful. just as a parting player last year he was wild 7.5 Sacks. 4 FF 1 pick. 1: TFL

he just needs to become an every down player. he’s as exciting a defender as we’ve had since TM7
