the go ahead touchdown on a flanker screen was egregious. there were 2 defenders bracketing the receiver within three yards. he faked one of them so bad he lost his footing, stumbled back and away from the receiver and wound up blocked on his back in the end zone 10 yards away from the receiver, the other defender whiffed from close range on another subtle juke and made a feeble attempt at an arm tackle, the receiver waltzed into the end zone. the very physics of the play is mystifying

I've been saying it since the beginning. This year is very similar to 2013.

I bet Preston Guy really know where people were supposed to be lined up. Yes it was bad, but everyone and their doing file break down now is laughable

The quickest fix is to simplify the scheme. Even if it creates some potential weaknesses you need the D to be able to understand their assignments. If they at least know what they are doing, they can play faster, be more instinctive and be more fundamentally sound. Once you at least get them functioning together and understanding scheme you can start to layer on additional schemes.

The problem is this should have been done in the off season. Coaches should have identified this issue. Also, if House is staying on staff, he needs to be able to get his own position coaches. If Cooks, Steeples and Lindsey aren't his guys he should be allowed to get coaches that can teach his system.

I was thinking the numbers would be higher, but then I noticed

I fricking hate being a primarily zone defense.

How many of Saban's players do you see loafing? Poor play and a lack of motivation and readiness is a reflection of poor coaching and poor leadership.

yes and combined with bad tackling it’s a nightmare

Loafing shouldn’t even be a recordable stat. It should be 0 all the time.

One of the reasons I like Caskey so much, I've heard him say things like "I don't know what the play call was on defense so I don't know if they lined up wrong but..." before basically discussing what was wrong without necessarily saying he knew why it was wrong, often giving a couple of reasons that could create the issue.

I definitely noticed him failing the most on Saturday

Penn really really hurt us this past week. Also, the four guys listed at the top of this list are a major reason why our defense has struggled so much thus far. Coaching sure hasn’t helped them either with their decision making.

The reality is that when there are this many players screwing up and it is team wide on that side of the ball, it is indicative almost entirely on something with the coaching. It doesn't absolve the players obviously, but does disappoint in the either quality or effort of the coaches on that side of the ball.

That is the scary thing. If one unit screws up, you can at least say "Well maybe we just need a change there". When the whole defense looks like this, it is all of the coaches on that side.

Last year, our more experienced defense and the transfers (who were mostly hits) picked up the scheme within a couple of weeks and we all saw the results. House started mixing in more zone blitzes and disguise looks and coverages. Other than UT, they were able to confuse QBs and make plays because of it.

Not really. After Bama they looked awful and were really only helped against Arky because Jefferson was out and the field was an ice skating rink.

They progressively got worse as the season went on. I don't really care about the Purdue game because that would be like counting KSU's win over LSU in the bowl game as legit meaningful.

Fact is LSU won with offense last year much of the time. They beat UF because of offense. UF got 35 points on that defense.

Outside of the Ole Miss game (they actually sucked to start the game too), they really were mediocre to bad much of the year when you look at it as a whole.

Coaching is the biggest issue because all these other things should be accounted for with it. Loafing, giving up on plays, being lost consistently, blowing assignments and gap responsibilities without consequence to that individual is on coaching. Then you have Kelly saying "No one else is coming through that door" in an effort to act like he is not responsible for being able to improve it.

In the end, this is a talented enough team on defense to win the SEC West because of the offense. The problem is the defense is not playing to its talent level and is not being coached to do it.

LSU has played 5 games and the defense has looked not embarrassing in 1 game (MSU). Grambling had 3 long drives in the first quarter alone against this defense. It was not surprisingly when the young guys came in and the lack of depth that an FCS school deals with leading to the numbers not looking atrocious.

Maintaining aggressiveness is one of the biggest challenges with a complex scheme where you run a lot of zone and that forces players to read and react.

House tried rolling out more complex stuff in year two than he did last year. That’s pretty typical for coordinators, but if true, it was a huge mistake with this year’s defense with the secondary as new and iffy as it is.

One of the best recaps I’ve seen.
If the players are tentative and can’t play fast, you’re more likely to get frustrated and give up when results don’t come. I think we’ve seen it 3 times already.

Ultimately it is on the coaches. It still stuns to see what this defense is with all the "effort" that the staff has put into that part of the team. It often appears that most of the players are in their first year of playing-just completely lost. How can this be a surprise to anyone who call himself a coach?

It is bad enough that the worst category was missed tackles with 14. What is really inexcusable is that the second worst category, with 13, was loafing.
Loafing?

Culture is a coach’s responsibility. House and the position coaches have to require effort and attitude. They decide who plays and how to hold people accountable.

Tacklking and Loafing are all things that come down to effort!

Loafing: 13

I would bench every starter on defense and play all my 2 or 3 deep. I would play my freshmen and my walk on’s. Couldn’t be worse than what was fielded last week. Then I would challenge the starters to earn their spots back. If they get fired up and earn it back great. If they get pissed about it and check out then screw them. We weren’t benefiting from them being here anyways.

I hope "loafing" isn't the same thing as "lallygagging"
