In Sloans press conference at the end he went to end it and then quickly said that Sampson has had some very good practices this last week. Said he had to mention that before leaving the podium.

Anderson is a failed experiment. At 5'8" (more likely 5'6"), he has not shown game speed / agility, and his hands are so-so. I'd rather see one of the new guys moving up.

I think CJ Daniels becomes our #1 receiver, Kyren Lacy #2, and the Zavion Thomas #3 in the slot.

Hilton has done nothing to impress anyone during his years at LSU. He has sucked, the entire time, and I don’t see him starting for us.

Also, our WR group sucks arse if Kyren Lacy ends up being the #1 guy.

What's the word on Sampson? Seems like he got some garbage time early last year, dropped a TD pass and then disappeared.

Curious as well but IIRC he dropped 2 potential TD passes no? Perhaps that answers the question why he didn't get more playing time

Not exactly related but I find it funny Hilton has always been touted as the fastest WR and we just had two 4.3 guys leave.

I think injuries have slowed him down his entire college career. This is a make or break season for him so I hope he shows out.

Sampson dropped those 2 TD passes in blowout reps last year, but none of the other freshmen receivers got playing time after that game either.

That is the main group. They may have a rotation of 7 guys going this year, I don’t see Sampson or Parker sitting out much.

From the spring practice videos it seems like 1st team is Lacy, Hilton, and AA in the slot

Since late last season I’ve said that Lacy and Hilton are the next two great ones. But I doubt Aaron Anderson holds onto that 3rd spot. There is just too much talent behind him, and he has not impressed me.

We won’t have a top two like we had last year, though - not unless one of the new guys is a stud.

I'm excited to see if Sloan uses AA a lot more than Denbrock was able to.

I got the impression that this offense would feature the seniors and Mason... mighta just been me

If lacy and Hilton are the next greats then why wouldn't you have a top 2 like last year?

I just don't see that for Hilton

If we are going to talk WR, let’s not leave out what Kelly has always used in his offense, the TE position.

Kelly has always made use of TE’s on offense, when he has a good one, or more. We finally have a group of TE’s to get the advantage on defenses. Many NFL teams use 12 personnel. One RB, 2 TE’s and 2 WR’s. Minnesota Vikings use 12 personnel over 8% of the time. Remember they have Tiger Justin Jefferson as their #1 WR.

6 TE’s taken in the first 63 picks of last years NFL draft. Kellys TE from ND went in the second round, the 35th pick.

With the usage of 2 TE’s, it helps the QB in more of a ball control offense. As for TE’s, a cover LB, could be too slow, a CB, too small, making a Safety having to come down in the box, spread out wide, etc. It creates mismatches. Will we use 13 personnel this season?

The extra TE’s help with the run game and play action.

“Using more double tight end formations (12 personnel) isn’t a new idea in the NFL. It’s been tried with mixed success over the last dozen years or so as a counter to the rising trend of using more 11 (3WR) personnel since the Patriots first started using it back in 2011 with Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. The general idea behind it is that as modern defensive personnel have gotten smaller, using formations with larger bodies will create mismatches the offense can exploit to its advantage. The use of 12 personnel can also put opposing defenses off balance, as it can be used effectively in both the run and pass. In that sense, it pairs well with play-action in the pass game as the formation invites the idea of a run play with an extra blocker at the offense’s disposal. Those advantages made 12 personnel the most efficient passing formation in the NFL 2022 season, despite it not being used all that often.”

So have there been any camp reports on how Anderson is doing? I thought he was going to be a difference maker last year as a slot guy and returner and he never showed any burst or agility. Maybe he was still not fully recovered.

LSU will lose 1-2 receivers and a tight end to the portal after spring football ends.

Sampson appears to still be raw. Hopefully he stays and develops but he has a ways to go. Out of that WR recruiting class Parker is the best one right now and probably wouldn't be a surprise if anyone followed him in HS. He was way underrated.

The other thing I noticed about Sampson last year was his lackluster blocking. To get playing time on a BK offense, you've gotta block.

IMO, Mason Taylor will be no less than the 3rd leader in yards and grabs.
