We all wish we had won another national title or two in 2013/2015/2017 but after 2017, he been a national seed 8 out of 10 years, went to Omaha 5 out of 10 years, won the SEC tournament 5 out of 10 years, won a national championship, and had another national runner-up. Anyone who doesn't think that is great isn't going to be pleased with the results of the next coach either, no matter who it is.

Pills make life worse too. It's a miserable thing.

I’m not entirely sure I’d assume he’s taking tons of pain killers.

I’m not very old, but have multiple herniated discs that are ejecting disc material into the space between my vertebrae and the spinal canal. Mine are in my lower back, so the pain radiates down my legs.

When it first happened, the pain was so severe — I describe it as feeling like someone is trying to pull the nerves out of my leg like a robin pulls a worm out of an apple. I got a three shots in the ER, one was some sort of painkiller, and three prescriptions, one of which was a painkiller. They gave me zero relief. I just take NSAIDs because nothing else has any effect. My pain tolerance is pretty high — I’ve broken bones and dislocated at multiple joints and gotten staples and stitches and everything else without much problem — but the sort of pain I’ve felt from discs putting the squeeze on the nerves running out from my spinal cord is totally unique, like nothing I’ve ever felt before.

Cut PM a little slack. What he’s going through may be disabling for a lot of other people, and there might not be any “pills” involved.

None of that made any sense from a medical standpoint.

Disc replacement was Paul’s last surgery per his retirement announcement. He said a former player performed the surgery.

I’ve had neck issues for many many years. As I said, they always start with medicine and exercises, which typically works when the short term. As you continue to lose fluid in your discs and bone spurs continue to form, the nerve channels narrow and the nerves become inflamed / irritated causing pain.

The next steps are disc replacement or fusion. Fusion will typically fix the headache and tightness issues.

Look man I’ve been through it.

Mainieri will have a fusion of the C4 and C5 vertebrae Nov. 16 (2020) as he tries to alleviate pain that has bothered him for two years and intensified in the last three months.

Yeah, he does. Its hard to look at. Honestly, if he is in that much pain he should have resigned before the season.

I can’t stand the man as a coach. But I certainly wish and pray he finds peace and pain relief away from baseball.

The pressures of that job can’t help. Retirement alone could find him some better days.

Watching him is alone painful.

Stents (you said "stints") aren't used in the cervical spine, and cervical surgery doesn't usually solve headaches, certainly not migraines, but hey you've had a few surgeries so you can explain it to everyone better than medical professionals.

I'm not going to argue all of the details with you, so carry on if you want.

I really do believe that his health had a lot to do with his mediocrity the past few years

I mean he’s been dealing with this for years now and admitted that he can’t coach as hands on as he has in the past and instead he passed on the duties to Nolan Cain and Eddie Smith

I've known Paul for several years, we work on an annual event for a few days, he is no prima donna. I've had cervical fusion, it is very, very painful, the surgery and PT are miserable, I soon will have to give up driving because I find it difficult to turn my head.

If he is going through half of what I go through, God bless him for trying. I hope he continues his charity work, he is a very beloved man in the BR area.
