Nah. We just had threads with large numbers of posters claiming that LSU was the national champion in 2003. It is 100% false, and these people haven’t gotten over it apparently.

Let's have a thought exercise here so maybe you and others like you can finally see the light.
let's pretend a random coach, we'll randomly pick mark richt, in his final 2003 end of season poll picked...let's say ohio state..as his national champion. Would you acknowldge ohio state as the 2003 national champion? If your answer is no, then wny not? mark richt is a real coach with a real, valid, fully authorized vote in the offical Coaches Poll. he voted Ohio State #1. So why are you dismissing it?
If I had to GUESS...I would assume your answer would be something like "because he's just ONE coach. There are many other coaches that vote in the Coaches poll to give you an aggregate ranking. One single guy by himself doens't matter since it's the tnrie poll that matters". Or somethin liek that. Am I close? Is that kind of on the right track?
What is amazing to ME is that most people would fully 100% be on board with that line of thinking in the above hypothetical scenario, but two seconds later will completely throw that line of thinkin totaly out the window. you see, the AP was but simply one small piece of the BCS pie. In 2003 the BCS was made up of the AP poll, the coahces poll, and a number of differnet computer polls that used formulas for margin of victory, strentgh of schedule, etc. Allll of the above were jumbeld up, mixed in a pot, and spit out a ranking. No one element was more important than the other. That ranking, that all teams agreed to abide by as it rleates to the championship, had USC ranked 3rd heading into bowl season. LSU played in the designated BCS championship game and won and are unequiovcally the national champion without a split.
The fact that one small slice of the BCS whole went against the grain could not possibly be more irrelevnat.

AP trophy became irrelevant
So irrelevant that USC was invited to the white house
So irrelevant that still today, MANY in the media still refer to the title as split
Choosing not to recognize it it doesn't diminish it's existence and relevance to those who do, no matter how much you disagree.
LSU won the BCS title, not the AP. It's not that big of a deal.

LSU was crowned winner of the Bowl CHAMPIONSHIP Series.
The Bowl Alliance and Bowl Coalition also called their game a championship despite the lack of inclusion of the Big 10 and PAC-10. Self-marketing does not determine the truth.

I can't figure them out either. Only ones that seem to work are on desktop through the site itself.

What is it with you and this crusade against reality?

A 1 loss LSU beat Oklahoma which was ranked #1 at the time and a 1 loss USC beat #4 Michigan.
LSU also had to play a Conf Championship game where USC did not since the PAC 10 didn't have one so LSU was 13-1 vs 12-1. LSU also had 5 Top 25 wins vs 2 for USC.
LSU was crowned winner of the Bowl CHAMPIONSHIP Series.
Seems pretty clear LSU was the champ.
Both the AP and Coach's Poll were factored into the BCS formula. However, only the Coach's Poll was contractually obligated to vote the winner of the BCS Championship game as #1. The AP voters could still vote how they saw fit. So what resulted was LSU being named the BCS National Champion. I think most consider that to be the "true champion" since everyone participated under the BCS system. However, USC is the "AP National Champion" as the AP was free to crown anyone they wanted as it's national champion.
Basically, it was the final gasp of the stupidity that had ALWAYS been the nature of college football in it being the only sport that arbitrarily voted a national champion vs. holding a playoff/tournament to an eventual end in a championship game.
Who is the "real" 2003 National Champ? I think most would say LSU. However, the only certainty is that if the roles were reverse LSU fans would scream to anyone who would listen that they were the 2003 National Champion...and the same amount of t-shirts, hats, paper weights, posters, and other doo-dads reflecting such would have been sold.

The coaches poll is factored into the BCS formula so even with them refusing to uphold their agreement LSU still ended up being #1.

the NCAA has never sanctioned a football championship at the FBS level. the Pac-10 and USC by proxy signed up for the BCS as the official national championship.
You are contradicting yourself here. You were correct in your first sentence, meaning there was no “official” national championship.
quote:
When that happened the AP and Coaches ceased being selectors and became part of the formula to determine who played in the National Championship game.
Except that’s not what happened. The NCAA still list them as major selectors, albeit unofficial, as is the BCS. More importantly, the vast majority of college football fans accept both LSU and USC as champions in 2003. Tiger fans can disagree all they want, but unofficial championships are dependent on public acceptance.

No, we wouldn't. And that was far from the last gasp of stupidity.

Well think about what you just said:::: Every major University had their Athletic Director and COACH agree on The Crystal Ball was the deciding factor.
