this is a head scratcher. I get hiring Pelini. Don’t really agree with it on some levels, but do understand

Yeah Linehan is odd, and honestly, Pelini benefitted his first tenure here from amazing defensive tackles. I don't really understand the obsession with going to the 4-3 either, because we don't really have the developed DL talent that we did during the Saban and Miles era. Aranda recognized the limitations of the defense last year, and made the choice of nurturing the defense along, allowing playmakers to develop by building their confidence. Aranda never had the elite DL talent that we had during Pelini's era. His tenure will be highly regarded soon.

The Linehan hire is wayyyyy more questionable than Pelini. I hated it when it happened and hate it even more after seeing the product on the field against a mediocre (at best) defense

Alabama and Florida are going to embarrass this LSU team.

He didn’t say any point I think He said at this point

And remember our defense was giving up a ton of points early last year without the offense constantly giving the other team the ball.

I take everything any coach says in the offseason with a grain of salt.

It was foolish when he said it and it’s even more foolish now. The defense held Clemson to 8 points in the 2nd half of the title game. Clemson would have scored 75 on us yesterday.

Ed wants to play aggressive caveman defense, fine, but it better improve.

I mean, not really. There was the Texas game, that seems to color people's view. Vandy scored 14 points off turnovers. When we gave up points early, like Florida, great adjustments by Aranda and some good luck helped us pull away. After the Ole Miss debacle, we were amazing on D, including against 3 top five teams.

In O’s defense I’m sure the defense did look better compared to the offense.

I know O has forgotten more football then I will ever know, but that statement sounds like something Leslie would say. That’s not a HC you want to be compared too.

Again “this point” would mean preseason

And the Ole Miss Depacle was in November.

The defense wasn’t good with all that talent for most of the season.

I personally think this defense probably was looking better than early last year but losing Stingley and Logan didn’t help.

Reminds me of the 2008 offseason, when we thought the defense was really good, but it turned out that the offense was just bad.

I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact that we caused 4 turnovers and allowed 600+ yards of offense.

No evidence for this. This D is clearly worse.

Aranda was more limited in what he had, especially after the poor DL recruiting at the end of Miles's reign. He nurtured the D along, developed playmakers (like turning Queen into a first-round LB after he didn't start the year), and when the D was finally healthy after the Arkansas game (when Delpit sat out so he could heal his ankle), we gave up 270 ypg, and only 259 ypg against A&M, UGA, OKLA, and Clemson.

There was significant regression in DB technique, in players that were supposed to be promising last year, like Flott.
