dont forget dennis tracey

the walk on frat guy who never saw a ball sailing out of bounds he wouldn't pull a superman on to try & save it even if he crashed head first into a table 4 feet out of bounds

that was such a fun time.

They played such basic offense - no imagination. If they weren’t run and gun they would get stagnant.

YOU SHUT YOUR WHORE MOUTH. The UNLV series and MARYMOUNT games were the stuff of LEGENDS!!

LSU being a part of that (and winning!) made those games even more epic.

i'm still tired from those games almost 40 years later.

Best college basketball ever to step foot on a court. Too bad we didn't have a good basketball coach.

That Geert Hamminck was not the same GH that played the next year. He needed to be abused every day by Shaq in order to develop into the starting player and NBA draft pick he became. But he didn’t get there until he had to be the guy. Once it was sink or swim the years he spent going against the best big man playing payed off and he swam.

You don't make two final fours and not know how to coach. On paper, yeah maybe in hindsight we prob should have went further but just b/c ur 7ft doesn't make you unbeatable. How did Villanova beat Georgetown and Patrick Ewing in '85?

depends on how you define "coach." Many coaches can recruit but are terrible at in-game tactics and strategy. Some are good at x-and-o but are bad motivators and have undisciplined teams. Yet they can still succeed due to talent alone, but probably underachieve relative to all that talent. Calipari is an example.

Hell, for college football, Gene Chizik and Larry Coker both won national championships and I'd argue neither of them is even an average head coach.

Coaching has many different facets. Dale was excellent at motivating less talented guys to play above their head. But he was a bad in-game coach and didn't do as well as he should have when he had elite talent.

it wasn't because Rollie Massimino was a coaching genius. 'Nova shot 79% from the field. That's once in a generation right there.

I saw the tram in 1989 play Miss St. in Starkville.

Geert Hamminck is not on the 1989-90 team, Richard Krajewski is the 3rd center on the team.

Roberts is too slow to play run and gun.

'Shaq is not the player he would become the next two seasons.

Chris Jackson did not play defense well. (which is why I have Ethan Martin as the first team all time point guard, Jackson is on the second team).

Hoarld was disappointing, Vernall was lost at times, but a strong player for a Freshmen and one of the top 5 players on the team.

It was a bad mix of players, lacking a true PF and OG player.

Lowe still owes me a Shaq autograph from this game. Lowe did not know the work I had done for the basketball media guide.

If your grammar and typing was done as badly as this post for the media guide, maybe he DID know the work you "had due" for the media guide.

Maurice Williamson averaged 12.2 points and 3.8 assists - 4th most points behind CJ, Stanley, Shaq and most assists.

Team averaged 91.2 points per game.

You left a certain Lafourche Parish native off that list. That said, football is different than basketball in that many times the HC is more of the big picture guy in games, with his coordinators actually handling the playcalling on each side of the ball.

That's not as much the case in basketball where the HC is generally dictating the game with input from his assistants. Dale was a player's coach. He took a little more of the approach of get great players, build them up, then don't overcoach them in a game. Give them more freedom to maximize the natural ability. That means there were times when maybe Dale should have put the clamps on his players at certain times of the game, but instead, deferred to his players to make the plays.

Saying Dale Brown was not a good coach isn't bashing it was a fact. He was a great motivator and a great recruiter. he took he 1986 team to the final 4 with Rick Blantion playing center. He idi more with less as they say.
