The 1989 lsu basketball squad we all know had Shaq, Chris Jackson, Stanley, and Vernell singleton. But they also had 7’0 Geert Hammink as well??? 3 nba 7 footers and Chris Jackson?? How the hell did that team ever lose??

we have been lamenting this our whole lives

I enjoyed Dale Brown, but he did less with more each season he had Shaq and Chris Jackson.
He was best when he had less from a player talent point of view.
I think he was a great motivator, but not a good Xs and Os coach. Those teams would have dominated with a strong coach.

There's only one ball to go around. Other than Shaq (inside only) and Vernel Singleton, they didn't really play much defense. Chris Jackson probably stole some continuity and comradery to make the team great because he could take the ball and get off a shot on anyone so the offense would struggle at times. Also, go look at the Georgia Tech team that beat them in the tourney that year. Georgia Tech was loaded with talent as well.

I gotta say this is one of the most tired topics on this board.
Shaq was an undeveloped freshman.
They lost in the tournament that had 2 lottery picks (one an upperclassmen and ACC POTY the other was the national freshman of the year yes ahead of Shaq)
They had another nba draft pick as well.
They made the final four themselves.
But “dale couldn’t even get out of the second round”

Because Dale Brown was a shite x&o coach. But a HOF recruiter and motivator.

When I was a kid, went to the LSU bball summer camp. At night we'd get to watch the team play pick up games in the dungeon. Shaq was a freak. Used to abuse Geert. One time ole Geert pulled up lame when they were up for another game and Shaq went off on him calling him a f'n pussy in front of about 100 kids. One of my best memories from those camps.

Egos were a big problem - it would come out later and that definitely affected team chemistry and efficiency. There was some looking out for me with some of the players.
Shaq was very green but Stanley Roberts was not, he was a pretty darned polished and skilled big man. Hammink was not really very good at that stage in his career, but Singleton and one name you forgot - Maurice Williamson, were good.
We lost some regular season games we should not have, resulting in a 5 seed and had to meet another team that probably underperformed in the regular season too in Ga. Tech as a 4-seed in the second round.

And dont forget Big Daddy Wayne Sims.
Those basketball years were the bright lights during the dark times of LSU football

Not LSU related but here are two interesting old school basketball players and a pretty cool what-if story:

Shaq wasn't Shaq his first year, Chris Jackson didn't play a lick of defense, and more importantly there were several teams loaded with NBA talent. People bash them losing to ga tech....a team that had 3 future NBA players and 2 of them were NBA stars. You didnt transfer and had to stay for 3 years back then. There were a lot of great teams.

My remembrance is Shaq was very young, Chris was used to being the whole offense and not a true point guard. Stanley sat out a year, and took the whole season to get in shape.
We ran into a highly skilled Ga Tech team that hit a lot of 3’s by Dennis Scott. We had a lead and got sloppy, and got in unnecessary foul trouble. Chris fouled out and both Shaq and Stanley had to play tentatively. Still had a shot by Maurice Williamson to tie or win. I think we win the NC if we got past that game.
Please remember Wayne Sims was part of that team.

He was Euro soft in an era when that type player got abused in the lane. He also developed a ton at LSU, but wasn't much more than a warm body early in his career.

For 1, Stanley Roberts was an absolute lazy, non caring, big for nothing guy.
He self admitted he did not ever care if he was good

This came from Shaq in a documentary. He was there, so guess that is our best insider info on what happened
