Not only did he pay his debt to society, once out he served as the dentist for inmates at Angola. And he did so for years.

For much of the 1960s-90s, local Baton Rouge affiliates showed the runback every Halloween night on 6 pm news. People looked forward to it. Somewhere along the way, a new generation of sports reporters either don't know of the fabled punt return or ignore it. Sad.

What is needed is that runback video with Kiffin’s face on Cannon’s body running thru Ole Miss administrators and donors.

My standards of admiration are a bit higher than yours. Sorry to burst your bubble.

"I'm told I was conceived that night!.""People have forgotten the DEFENSIVE play Billy Cannon made near the end of the game that sealed victory. Without that play the Fightin' Tigers lose. I'm told I was conceived that night!."

That's cool! I was a 6 month old fetus at the time. One of the greatest games I have experienced. On Cannon's punt return I developed a migraine due to the compression waves in the amniotic fluid. Still remember my parents going crazy, as was my twin brother and me.

Ole Miss gave up a total of 21 points that whole season. And that punt return was 1/3 of that.

My father-in-law was a freshman at that game, and he maintains that Ole Miss team was the best visiting team he ever saw in Tiger Stadium. Better than 79 USC; better than 79 Bama. Best.

That one play cost Ole Miss the national title.

and he assisted QB Warren Rabb making the goal line tackle of the OM RB to preserve the win!

What was almost equally as impressive was the goal line stand to stop them from scoring, which Billy Cannon was a part of.

"Elmore at QB, he takes, he fakes, he does NOT SCORE!!!
Ben Leblanc hit him with the aid of Billy Cannon."

P.S. I can remember talking with an older Ole MIss fan(nice guy if you can believe that lol) in '95 in Oxford who said he was there in '58 and said he would never go back to Tiger Stadium b/c he was heartbroken.

Oh, they still claim it for sure. And I guess that’s more legit than the SEC West co-champ banner from the year Eli fell down.

Later in the 1970's when Jake Gibbs was Ole Miss baseball coach at least 1-2 times every game LSU fans would loudly do the audio where Jake could hear it. "Jake Gibbs back to punt. Gets another fine punt away. Billy Cannon watches it bounce on his own 11 ..." Coach Gibbs would often just shake his head and say "Geeze, you guys don't ever let it go."

Yeah was there Eddie F stepped just OOB, then Hodson said run it again but stay in bounds bro. But recall they had still time on clock and forgot their QB but damn near completed a pass down near the 50 I think with maybe a time out .
