Odd but very interesting conversation with a huge Bama fan

Let me first say, this fan is one of the biggest Alabama fans I've ever met. She's about as die-hard a fan as you can get, which is why our conversation threw me for a loop.
As a good LSU fan, I immediately began ribbing her as soon as I saw her. I asked her how she felt and she stated she didn't know Saban personally, but it felt like someone close to her passed away. She said she's said Saban's name over the last 10 years more times in her house than her kids' names.
This is where our conversation took a turn I was not expecting. I asked her who she would like to take over and she said she didn't care. She said we just need "a coach," right now, not "the coach." I immediately asked her what she was talking about.
She said it didn't matter who they hired because Alabama fans are so unrealistic right now that it doesn't matter what the next coach accomplishes, it's never going to be enough. She added that even though the fans might not say it, the fans are still expecting Alabama to have the top recruiting class, win the West and the SEC Championship and compete for a NC every year.
She said Alabama just needed "a buffer" to come in and take some lumps for a few years and then you fire him and then you go after "the coach." She said losing a few games will make Alabama fans have more realistic expectations and then you go get "the coach" and then he has a chance to be successful.
Needless to say, I was shocked because she was the last person I was expecting to hear that from, but she's 100% right.

She sounds like a level headed gump. Many of the real old line Alabama people are, it’s the inbreds and their new, out of state douche bag yankee and cali bro students that suck.

Risky.
A lot of really historic programs are still looking for the guy to take them to the promised land. Some get it back…..most don’t

LOL. Poor gal.
No worries. The SEC is still run, by and large, by Bama alum. ESPN is going to see to it that Bama will be in the playoffs annually no matter what. The SEC will continue to fix games for Bama weekly, if needed. Nothing is going to change other than who is roaming the sidelines.
With all the advantages Bama has, I wonder if their next coach could go unbeaten more than once in their tenure there.

So you deliberately hire a worse coach only to try to punish your fan base because they got too spoiled but then in 3-5 years you come back to them and ask them for a ton of money so then would be the time to win again the most.

She's not wrong. Everyone seems to understand this and I'm sure most coaches don't want to be the guy that follows Saban.
Rees may be the hire based on this and maybe Bama can save some money for NIL.

Yeah what she said is pretty obvious. The next guy will be the rebound. He wont last. He's there to temper expectations and to hurry up and try to calm things down. 3 years maybe.

When any icon educator (coach, band director, choir director, etc.) leaves, the interim hears, "Coach so and so didn't do it like this. That's not the way so and so said to do it." etc.
The program will coast for a while. Les Miles was great until Saban's recruits were gone.

Yea well what happened to Nebraska when Osborne left? They've never been the same.

Wait…are you saying that’s not what we did when hiring Trent Johnson?

Sounds like Alabama is primed for James Franklin

These types of people are very sad. There are plenty of LSU fans like this too.

She's correct. There has to be a reset of expectations before a legit coach will touch that job. Take Norvell at FSU. He wouldn't have survived after Bobby Bowden. It took him years to to get that program where he wanted it and the next Alabama coach just isn't going to get that kind of time. They are not going to tolerate 3-loss seasons for the next 4-5 years.

That is absolutely pathetic.

What are you talking about? Outside of a couple years (still top 15ish), Les consistently had a top 10 class. There were a handful of top 5 classes as well.

I would be pissed as an Alabama fan if they just hired a coach to be hiring a coach, (like she’s says needs to happen) instead of trying to get the best they could.

She sounds pathetic for mentioning a coach more than her family
Recommend a few therapists for her
