I don't think this was ever in the cards unfortunately. We weren't going to steal a current, proven great DC from another school. There's no way. I rather this move than trying to find an up-and-comer from some mid-tier football program.

This but O takes a little of the sting out of it.

I like it now. Dfense is more about your personnel and not the scheme IMO. Great defensive coaches don't look so good when the other team can just push you around.

You should get over this. Chavis left, LSU didn't push him out to bring someone else in.

I'm with you TigerBait1127

Thrilled we got Ed O. Don't get me wrong. I'm ecstatic about getting bik.

But still... We hired Kevin Steele as the DC. People are more excited about our DL hire than our DC hire.... It should be the other way around.

And yea they are great recruiters... But it's not like we are struggling on the recruiting end.

1 great position coach hire. 1 bad coordinator hire. And the coordinator position has more weight to it and is more important.

Just gonna see how it all plays out. But as of now, considering the length it too to hiring a DC and the names being thrown around with the job and Steeles resume, it wasn't a good hire. Hopefully we are saying something diff in a year.

rantards seem to think the opposite. Scheming is child's play, figuring out recruiting is super tough though.

I understand that he left. I also understand why he left, and that it could have been prevented.

So why would I be happy about downgrading at DC? I would have rather taken the risk on an up and coming DC if we're going to put a budget on the position.

I'm not some negative poster who constantly bitches. I'm considered a pumper on here. I just don't think Steele is something to be excited about and that can easily be backed up with facts.

This, and I think coach O would have more than compensated for any recruiting deficiencies. It is certainly a positive, but I'd rather my DC have his scheme as his strength.

We have a stud CB coach, a stud LB coach, a stud DL coach, and an all start recruiting team.

I just wish one of them was a proven coordinator. Hopefully by game time each week, the preparations leading up to it allow the defense to run like a machine.

I'm happy that all the threads predicting the next DC are over. I'm happy to read all the meltdowns. They make my day more entertaining. There's nothing anyone can do about the choices, but the whiners gonna whine like crazy and make empty threats that will be meaningless.

I just hope recruits aren't reading this board. The meltdowns won't be entertaining to them. Our fans, right now and for the past few years, are reason enough not to want to play here and the passion BS doesn't cut it. People are just plain over the top here.

I'm looking forward to the results of these two hires. It will make the first games interesting, for sure. We'll see what happens.

Still don't think Steele is a good DC hire but with Coach O onboard think it certainly changes the picture of what Miles is trying to do. With great talent, Steele could be effective IMO. It doesn't change the DC hire but certainly gives me hope that this will be an extremely talented team a few years down the road.

Much happier than last night, for sure.
O is a huge get IMO, and at least we seem to have a strategy.
No need for Xs and Os if we have all of the talent.

I definitely feel better than I did last night. Might as well just give it time. Let's see what he can do with elite talent.

I'm fired up about the new defensive coaches. Chauvis' contain defense was dumb IMO based on the athletic talent he had and cost us some big games when we couldn't hold leads at the end of halfs and games. We slould play a more attacking style defense to take advantage of our players' skills and to try to create more turnovers for our plodding offense.

Our D line sucked at getting off blocks and our pass rush was pathetic. I don't think I could have survived another year watching out super-athletic defensive ends trying to bull rush 315 lbs offensive tackles all game long.

I,for one, was ready for a change from Chavis. I'm sure I'll get the usual amount of sh#t for saying that, but I'm looking forward to seeing a new "scheme" on defense next fall.

I like our chances in recruiting. However I don't care for our selection of a DC. I do like the hire of coach O.

It feels like it will be recruit the best or go home for us.

That's a reasonable opinion. Your other opinions on Steele (that he's dumb/clueless/etc.) are ridiculously overboard.

Meh:

quote:

During the 1999 season, Steele's Baylor team was involved in what ESPN.com called one of the top 10 worst coaching decisions, in 1999, when he chose a running play rather than a kneel down with his team leading and possessing the ball in the game's final 12 seconds and the opponent (UNLV) out of timeouts. The ensuing Baylor fumble and UNLV return for a touchdown gave the Rebels a shocking win.

One of the dumbest things I've ever heard a coach doing. I don't think I've called him dumb or clueless, I just said:

Steele makes Les look like a genius

I am and I still will reserve judgement on Steele as DC but yea they might compliment each other extremely well.
