"held off Ole Miss, 58-37, on Saturday evening"
37 pts is outscoring not holding anyone off...
almost every good team is scoring above 30 on us and even Vanderbilt w 38.

The PASSION STARTS from the top.
Aranda is not showing PASSION from the sidelines...look at the body language
that rubs off on the players.
MANY are laying back and NOT being aggressive.

He needs to earn HIS salary and not rely on E and Brady earning theirs.

Call me naïve, but I think that when it comes down to crunch time the defense will show up. I think they were lackadaisical because they knew that the offense had given them such a big lead.

If we don’t get the ball back on those onside kicks our defense weren’t stopping shite. We should never have been in that situation but the defense just isn’t very good this year. Not only do they let other teams score but they let them score on explosive plays which takes no time off the clock and here comes the offense to bail them out again. When we play teams like Ohio st. or Clemson that have an offense and a DEFENSE these clowns in here will see. It might get ugly. I said my opinion and it’s a tiger message board so

fair approach to the topic

I do think quite a bit is motivation....the D knows they can lean on the offense......so they do....

It was extremely clear on saturday in the 2nd half the defense was ready to go home....extremely clear

You'll get down-voted because it's the rant, but depending on if this pace continues, at least a contract restructuring. The way offense is now played in football in college, it's so electric and high scoring that you just won't really be able to hold teams under 15 like you used to be able to. That being said, shelling out that much money for a defensive coordinator is silly especially when you are in close games when the offense scores 45+ points.

Aranda has always been this way, even when he had top defenses

seems like an odd thing to blame the defensive struggles on

People can say it's not the scheme but I'll never believe it. Aranda's scheme (regardless of the qb we play) seems to be very base defense and play prevent. How many hobbled/inexperienced qb's have we faced that we refused to put pressure on? At a minimum Florida/Auburn/Alabama. Instead we rushed 3 and our super awesome overrated edge rusher and get zero rush letting every hurt or scrub quarterback look like Tom Brady picking our defenders apart. No defender can realistically guard like that.

Our linebackers have been very slow sideline to sideline. Queen has his bright spots occasionally but gets fooled too much. IMO Brooks seems to be the only one who has come in and made impacts in different games. I'm not saying he should start or anything but, he sure makes an impact when he's able to get in.

I keep hearing it's all big plays that beat this defense and that's true. But almost every game we have let the opposing team put together a drive to get down into scoring position on their first possession. It's almost a given at this point.

I guess it turns out that giving Aranda all that money and title isn't going to pay off for us. I won't lie, I thought it was a great idea at the time and yeah I didn't think O would be here long. Either way, defense needs to get it's crap together and fast.

Florida sticks out especially. We had multiple big plays where guys were standing around watching and loafing when the first man got to the ball carrier. Go back and watch the replay you can’t miss it. There’s nothing “fundamentally” wrong with the scheme, I don’t even know how’d you know that since you do t know what it is specifically. We have 6 starters playing hurt and we have no pass rushers. The only thing that’s changed this year are the players.

There were times where we had 2 freshmen DB's on the field. I don't count Stingley so really 3, and young young LB's who just aren't ready to play. This season our team has done well in stopping the other teams primary offense. Then after adjustments are made, they can't regroup for that in game change. A few of those big runs we saw the players over run it. Sometimes the offense just makes a good call too.

Completely agree.

Completely agree. (The negas are out in force, though, and this issue fuels them. They are more mad about the defense than they are happy about the offense and results. Most Negas wanted Miles fired so they could get Herman or Jimbo. O being successful challenges their very "Nega-ness" for lack of a better word.)

can this defense hold up enough to get us to victory.

We are going to face some very complete, balanced offensive teams, no question. Better than Bama? I'm not sure. The defense has played well enough to win.

Could somebody explain why Coach Miles almost always had a great Defense? What caused this transition from great to average Defense?

Who helps in recruiting these questionable defensive players that everyone says we have? Asking for a friend.

Not the main reason but part of the reason is I think are guys are scared to tackle or get hit. If you watch cordale flott or most them they are watching tackles and not swarm tackling... if they are tackling they are just diving for the feet blindly. heck kary vincent might be out best tackling db

Yes the D needs to be addressed but we'll have to win with what we've got. Luckily our offense is lights out and good enough to carry us to a championship. Other years our D has carried us.

There are times our D looks good, there are times we don't seem to play with the aggressive bite we're used to seeing. Injuries, playing with a big lead, lack of depth are all showing up. Hopefully we'll be healthy enough come late December.

A couple of the frustrating things to me are not great tackling 10 games into the season. You'd think we would have improved on this.

Also, even if Saturday was an 'outlier' against a very fast QB & RB - Ole Miss has run a similar run scheme the last several years, regardless of coaching. We have 10 years of game film watching our own D get fooled by misdirections & fakes vs. Ole Miss. And our D still got fooled by those same plays. A couple of the big plays Saturday were guys just not staying home on defense.

I've been giving Aranda the benefit of the doubt, but tackling and discipline on defense are on players and coaches to address.

Look at the ranking of the defenses! It's relative. Do you believe LSU is the only team that plays teams with possible improved offenses? Compared to other defenses LSU's has dropped every single year under Aranda. I don't know what else to tell you. I'm sure there's some other hidden gem of a stat out there that someone can dig up in order to defend Aranda but I'm not seeing it!

Who says he's above criticism?

I think all people are saying is that you don't fire someone when they've given you three good years and one off-year. And don't say there haven't been a ton of people saying he should be fired and that they're "done with him."
