This. It's not a reason to melt the way people are making it out to be

How is that even possible at a place like LSU? Why didn’t he replace the coach with health problems?

You might be too young to remember this one:

Steve Kragthorpe has Parkinson’s.

Aug 4, 2011, 01:26 PM ET
BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSU assistant coach Steve Kragthorpe has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and is relinquishing his duties as offensive coordinator, but is remaining on the Tigers' staff.

Kragthorpe, who was hired during the offseason, will remain as the quarterbacks' coach while offensive line coach Greg Studrawa has been elevated to offensive coordinator.

"Our concern is for Steve and his family," Miles said Thursday, the same day LSU held its first practice of fall camp. "We are all hopeful that he will have the opportunity to coach for a number of years and be at LSU and continue the things he has gotten started here.

When a head coach thinks his team doesn’t need a d line coach, that’s a problem…

It’s incredible that a program like this has this issue

More on defensive line consultant Pete Jenkins…

Kelly acknowledged that he and his staff have to put their players in better positions and coach them up. That’s why he brought in coach Jenkins, who Kelly called an outstanding technician. Jenkins has been working with them on things like stepping with the right foot, using their hands properly, and other skills they know but haven’t been using in a while. “These guys will be better,” Kelly said. “They haven’t had a defensive line coach since spring, and that’s on me. You’ll see a difference [this week] relative to the line of scrimmage.” Part of that difference, Kelly said, will be that they’ll use four down linemen to create a new line of scrimmage and take the air out of it by closing the lanes.

The DL coach has cancer and stepped away VERY late in the process and Kelly thought the talent would be enough to overcome it. He was obviously wrong. But to act like he just didn't hire a DL coach for shits and giggles is living under a rock.

Get this reasoned, well thought out, and nuanced take the F out of here and jump onto the “Kelly can’t coach” bandwagon.

Lindsay got a tough break.

But the Program has to go on. You move Lindsay into an analyst role and you get a DL Coach.

Because the health problems didn’t happen until August.

I’m not sure why he’s saying we haven’t had a DL coach since spring (although I haven’t seen the actual quote either) unless his point is that Jimmy Lindsey’s health issue happened before fall camp.

To lay it out completely:
- Jamar Cain left to go to the Denver Broncos in late March.
- Jimmy Lindsey was hired to replace Cain in May.
- Jimmy Lindsey left the team due to a personal health issue in early August.

Y’all are acting like Kelly had 6 months to find a new DL coach and it’s simply not true. Sure we can all say he should have hired Jenkins sooner, but let’s be honest about the circumstances.

I saw it after posting. Doesn’t change the actual timeline. Like I said, the only explanation I can think of is that Lindsey left before fall camp. But the reality of the situation is that we had a DL coach until early August.

He's been a 9-3 coach for his career...he finds a way (like he did here last year, and might here well again this year). But that's what he is. He is not elite. He has never been elite. He won't start being elite here.

Those same exact words you could have used for the 3 previous Championship winning coaches here:

Saban
Miles
Orgeron

Let's give the man some slack for the clusterfrick he inherited.

Well you would face legal issues if you just outright replaced someone who was on leave due to health. He had a couple of guys fill in thinking that would be enough of a band aid until the actual DL coach was able to return to duties. It obviously has not been effective and thus he made a change.

I’ll bite on the fact that we didn’t anticipate talent not being able to compensate for a lack of a coach even though that’s almost soft pitch for a coach on a $95 mil contract who’s priority should be making sure his players are well coached.

People call this man a CEO and praise his ability to run things like a corporation yet ignore the fact that he failed to anticipate this when it was right in front of his face the entire time.

Your average fan with little to no knowledge of the game saw the d line as an issue against GRAMBLING. How does it take game 5, a loss for this to happen. There’s no way that anyone who objectively watches film did not know this was going to be problem in the future. We got by state because they are atrocious and that probably gave a lot of false confidence, not false confidence we should expect a $95 mil coach should fall prey to.

CBK has never been a defensive coach, and i hope he has learned that hard lesson. Offense may have made him successful at ND, it will not in the SEC.

And Miles was crushed for elevating Stud to OC when Kragthorpe had to step down.

It's actually an interesting parallel. 2011 LSU has the best D in their history and an anemic offense run by an interim OC that took over for the OC that stepped down due to health. The 2011 D was able to carry the team though until the NC game.

2023 LSU has a top offense (#4 last time I looked) and the defense suffers because the DL coach steps away due to health issues. The 2011 offense was at least functional against equal or inferior opponents. 2023 D is historically bad.

We've pretty much had an ST "coach" for the past two years in name only as well.
this year we don't even have one "in name only". We have coaching by committee there as well.

ETA: If I am not mistaken, the DL coach was part of that committee.

Saban hired Tommy Rees and Pete Golding. No coach hits 100% of time.
