We all want the best head coach in the world at LSU. We actually had that for a brief minute. Did anyone know it when he was hired?

Saban took over at Michigan State in 1995 and posted the following records:
6–5–1
6–6
7–5
6–6
10–2
That’s a total of 35-24-1, which amounts to a .59 winning percentage.

I don’t think LSU should worry about hiring a top 5 current coach. Lets find a guy that is detail oriented, knowledgeable on one side of the ball and has at least a few years of success at a tough place to win, preferrably in a p5 conference.

Based on this criteria, here are a couple less obvious names
Mike Stoops
Kirk Ferentz
Mike Gundy

Who else is at a place that doesn’t have a ton of history, lacks a natural recruiting base, or lacks resources that is routinely over-delivering?

Ferentz isn’t leaving his current job.

No thanks re Gundy.

Stoops is interesting.

Awful list but I do agree, hiring a coach is a crapshoot. There’s probably some coordinator out there who could win multiple titles here but we’ll never know it.

I'm surprised no one is mentioning pj fleck or the defensive coordinator from Georgia

Kirk would never leave that job. It is the best fit for both him and Iowa

None of these are or will be candidates.

Mike Stoops has had 0 success at all as a HC
Ferentz is never leaving Iowa
Gundy is very average and is not a good recruiter and doesn't even like to recruit. Horrible list.

LSU was coming off the worst decade in football program history then and had a rep of not paying well and not supporting the program with facilities and improvements. Things look bad today, but we are a million miles from that spot. We don’t have to hire a re-tread who has never truly excelled.

Saban was also already established as a phenomenal recruiter who had MSU getting players from outside their normal territory and beating out Michigan for guys. No one on your list is a phenomenal recruiter who has lifted their program as much as Saban moved the needle for MSU.

We had the greatest coach of modern day football but he wanted to try NFL like his mentor Belechik, then he wanted to come back. Bertman tried to tell him not to go, anyway I don't know if he would still come back but HELL YEAH try and get him !
